1st Velvet Buck Photo of 2005

Well I've had my camera out for a few weeks now, but it just hasn't really been picking up any photos. I've moved it around a few times, but it seems like the deer just aren't hanging around my neck of the woods right now. Unfortunately I'm completely surrounded by corn fields that, given our current drought, have seen better days. The nearest bean field is probably 1/2 mile away, and the neighbor just cut his alfalfa field down to nothing so I'm fresh out of good food right now. The only thing I've got going for me is that I do have a good sized pond that the deer are using for water right now. Trouble is, there's really no good trees to hang a camera on, and I'm too worried about getting my stuff stolen to put it up on a pole that's just stuck in the ground.

In any case, I got a good photo of this buck about a week ago. He looks to be a good 2 1/2 , possibly a 3 1/2, from what I can make out. Good deep chest and a good amount of bulk at the base of his neck as well. For early July he's sporting a pretty decent rack, so I'm hoping to get some more photos of him in the near future, and possibly see him up close and personal once October 1 rolls around. From what I can see he's got a solid 4 points on his right side, and from what I can make out so far it looks like possibly 5 points already on his left, with possibly more to come. It looks like there are either some stickers, or points pointing the wrong direction from what I can tell from the photo.

And now, I leave you with my hopes and dreams for this upcoming season. Chances are I'll never see this deer in real life, or when I do I'll mess it up somehow, but it's always nice to dream.
