2 y/o Non Typical Pics from my Leaf River
 

He isn't huge but very interesting. I think he was shot in the rear end, or maybe hit by a car. I saw this buck during turkey season before he had any antler growth and he was limping pretty good on the rear left leg.

I am not too sure if I would shoot this buck. He does look as if he isn't too healthy, so maybe he should be culled but he really isn't that big. There are a lot of other bigger bucks in our patch of woods so I will have to see if I want to take this guy or not.

Cull bucks generally aren't that big when they're taken. If you can spare the tag, I would take him out. I hate to see animals suffer, and if he's still limping bad when season rolls around, I'd put him out.

I wonder if it's a birth defect. Look how long his tail is. I've never seen a deer with a tail that long.

Any idea how the wound/injury was inflicted to his left leg??? Have you seen the deer many times? I'd LOVE to get a couple years on that guy!! He's going to be a great/unique trophy!

I have seen him personally only once. I watched him for about half an hour back in turkey season one morning. I have him patterned pretty well and he beds in the same spot every day I am pretty sure. I hope the neighbor lets him grow a bit more than this, because he beds on their ground and then comes over to ours to eat from our feeder. He has a pretty good limp, but seems to get around well enough to make it through last winter. I will be going over to the neighbors house next weekend I am over there to talk to them and gather their feelings on QDM, hopefully they will let this guy walk for another year or two.

Looks like he had a tuff winter with the injury. He may snap out of it and be a big one in a year or two. Nice pic.

I have seen something simailar to this when I was hunting. I think that when a deer has suffered an injury I.E. the rear leg the antler growth on the same side of the body suffers. A friend of mine shot a 10 point a few years ago that had a great 5 on the right side but the 5 on the left was deformed. When we got to the buck we found the front left leg was about 5" shorter than the right, when the deer was processed we found that this deer was injured in the left shoulder. It was an old injury, my friend said you could not tell by the way the deer was walking. This looks as though it could be the same sort of deal. If I can find a picture I will post it!

I thought that an injury to the rear left would affect the RIGHT side antler--anyone else heard this before?

I was under the same impression...that injuries altered antler growth on the opposite side. Could be wrong...as I have been many times before.

I would probably pass that buck, the only way/reason that I would shoot that buck is if that drop tine seemed to cause pain or extreme discomfort to the deer. Which could very easily happen if another point where to grow underneath the deers jaw. Most of the time when a deer is injuried and his antlers become nontyicalish, once he recovers from his injury his antlers will grow back like normal. If a deer suffers an injury that will not allow the deer to heal normally then the antlers will stay nontyicalish. But this deer might very well be a normal looking 8 or 10 pointer next year. If his leg heals up then you probably wont regonize him next season.

cool looking critter, looking at your most recent pick th deer does not look very healthy... Not much meat on them bones that are showing, I would bet he does not make it through the winter this year...

Not too sure, he has one on both sides. I am not sure what exactly it is. The more I look at close up pics of this deer the more I think he may get taken out this year if he doesn't start to look more healthy. There are other pics where he is really looking skinny with all sorts of ribs sticking out.

Thats pretty interesting. I would say he is crippled, probably from a car. His front shoulder doesn't look right, and neither does his left hip. I doubt he will make it through the winter unless he has a miraculous recovery. I would keep an eye on him and see how he progresses, and decide closer to season on what to do. JMHO

Odd looking deer. He leaves all kinds of questions unanswered. I would kill him if he gives you the oppertunity. Don't think you want him in your herd not knowing what is wrong with him.

Strange buck.From what you are saying it doesn't look healthy I'd take him out of the heard. i don't think he will last Thur the winter
