deer cocaine??
 

I'm lookign to set up a few new mineral licks in some other areas im considering hunting. I'm going to be using trail cameras on these licks to monitor the bucks in the area. My question is that is it to late in te summer to start a deer cocaine lick, becauseI read that as the temperatures cool down the deer will not use them as much, andI don't want to waste my money.I think I'm gonna go with deer cocaine becuase I'm using it stircly as an attractant, and it seems to be the best on the market for that purpose, but im open to any other ideas too, thanks.

I used to sell deer cocaine some people loved it and would never buy anything else some people hated it it has worked good for me just try it and hope it works for you

A much more economical and effective mineral lick is the following. Mix it yourself and save a ton of money. Why pay for some namebrand stuff features the SAME ingredients???

WHITETAIL DEER HOMEMADE MINERAL MIX RECIPE
Printable version
Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loose kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

-Use a 3 pound or similar size coffee can to use as your measure for each part of the mix.

-Mix all together well but not until read to use, keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use.

-Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

-Mix your mineral mixture with the soil.

Maintenance:

-Replenish in 6 months with fresh supply of mineral, and then each year there after.

I have used deer cane for a few years now with great success , the deer sometimes become protective over the sites... But Some sites we have stopped replenishing for even up to 2 years now , still get torn up by deer , i dunno if there is still traces of minerals there , or if the deer just eat the dirt out of routine? but it wokrs

if your just looking to set up a camera and get some pictures then go to home depot or walmart and buy a 40 lb. bag of water treatment solar salt. its lke 4$ a bag and will do the trick. just clear out the brush in a 5foot circle and throw it on the ground. some like to dig a hole or mix it up with the soil but the deer will do that for you. it is not too late as deer will use it most likely till the end of the summer. if your looking to grow antlers or improve the health of the deer the recipes mentioned might be better but i believe its more genectics when it comes to minerals.

I used Deer cane for several years. It worked ok, as long as I got the one with mollasses in it. Last year I used the mineral from G-bow, and it worked great. And it didn't have anything sweet in it. They just tore up the ground where I put it. But, I can't use it any more. Illinois changed their laws, and it is now illegal to use any mineral.[:-]

I have used a home made mix deer cocaina and others.

I have used them all with equale good luck.

I have7 mineral licks on the farms I hunt
Most of them the deer have dug out a hole to get the mineral and salt

I don't hunt over them
I put out mineral out in the winter and again in mid summer ( easy axcess)
I find most of time I get more use of the licks in the late winter thru early summer.
IMO the mineral licks help the deer grow a better rack and help the does with the needed minerals.

Il-Cornfed's formula is good.

Deer cocaine is too expensive and you will get the same results with his formula, all the deer are after is the Calcium which you can provide with just a commercial lyme.

I have used Deer Cocaine for 3 years now. In almost every instance the deer demolished the area. I have ended up with wallows that were close to a foot deep and 6 feet across. I currently have it set up in three locations with deer cameras nearby and expect to have some pictures for you folks shortly.

Great stuff. I am happy to use it.

STOP SHOUTING:D i would refer the question to a biologist but the book i read says that plain old salt would help with insect control and does lactating.

I had decent success with it. However, we decided to stock up big time and go with the red trace salt rock that we bought a feed co-op. We bought 300 lbs of the stuff. Over at our place in Iowa, the deer have destroyed any spot we put it. Even right next to our sheds that house our tractors for foodplots, they have a huge hole dug. We have one lick at our farm in Wisconsin thats close to 8 or 9 years old that is large a foot or two large in diameter than a kiddy pool and about two feet deep. the minerals get in the ground and the deer paw and scrape away at it, trying to eat the salt in there. deer really do love salt

Yes. Antler growth is still occurring. In fact, it may be especially beneficial now as this is a critical time in that regard.

We have been using it for years and I must say it has madea difference. The statement that the deer will eat the dirt is true! The sites were we have been putting it out the dirt is GONE. There are 6" deep holes and range from 3-6 ft around. The deer will find it no matter where you put it and keep coming back.

We hunt in PA where the deer are not that big in body as a rule but several years ago before the AR we shot a 10 pt buck with a 17" spread that only weighed 105 dressed. Now the wieght loss may be a result of the rut was in full and he was a active dude, if you know what I mean. LOL

Point of interest...........ever notice that in the east you always see deer feeding along all the highways, reason may be because of the salt the highway crews put down in the winter.I guess you could dump a bag of rock salt if you wanted to keep deer around.

I've suspected that for some time now .
There's stretch of I-71 near Louisville , Kentucky where I work that is just alive with deer all year round . Kentucky isn't cheap with the salt when the snow falls , they slather the roads with it . Sadly , despite the high numbers of deer strikes the area is pretty much a no hunting zone due to development .

Ya know, I have seen that on numerous occasions but never gave it much thought. Are they the same type of salt? For some reason I always thought that the road salt was harmful.

I don't know my guess it the same. We all know it is harful to our vehicles (LOL) but to deer I don't think so. They mix it with some type of sand but as you know deer love Deer Cocaine and eat the dirt so I don't think the sand hurts them. here is my thinking, the highway crews put down the salt, the roads become wet and with the high speed of travel of the vehicles the spray from the vehicles travels to the sides of the roads where it lands. As the snow melts it goes into the ground as a trace mineral which the deer locate and eat it. I dumped a bag of rock salt out in the yard near my cociane and the deer found it and it was gone. Just a note, look at the fur trees along highway if the spray of salt hits them they will be all brown/dead on that side. Sometimes these trees are 20-30 yards from highway.

I use my own, named it deeRoids (pronounced deer roids) its a lot cheaper than coCaine and according to their label a lot better for the deer. The back of their package says 40 to 45 percent salt! Mine is less than30 percent.Then the next biggest isCalcium andPhosphorous. it also has some other minerals in it. Check out the pics on my site, www.deeroids.com.[/align]

I just put a block of deercane out in March and I've been very pleased with the amount of activity at the site. I just cleared a spot along a trail and dumped a 5# block. After a couple of rains it started to get tore up. I'll be watching that trail closely.

Why do you think they call it deer cocaine? They don't like it like bowtech said, but they get addicted to it. I think their is something called ethics. Why not learn how to pattern your game and do some homework and try to figure them out in their own domainand it will make you a better hunter to try to figure them out on their own turf as opposed to hunting them over an addictive bait. Give me a break.

When didI ever say anything about hunting over this "addictive bait" because I don't think I ever said that. Do some homework?? I would bet anything that I've already spent more time in the woods patterning whitetails then you will hunting them this entire season.I proposed the question as a quick way to get a look at the bucks in an areaI was unfamilar with, not to hunt them over it, soI think you should probably do a little homework of your own before you question someone elses ethics.

First year using the stuff (Circa 2001) thatevening we pouredall of itout ,, Next morning we passed by ,that area was like it had been excavated by a back hoe no less than 10 in. deep 4 feet across 6 feet in lenght.:eek:
