RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

It all depends on the conditions. I shoot and practice out to 50yrds. I have no plans on taking that shot and I have never taken a shot further than 20yrds. But if the conditions were perfect and I mean perfectit would not bother me to shoot 40yrds. The bad deal is that there are so many factors that play into taking a long shot.

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

Right now I feel comfortable taking a shot up to about 30 yards or so depending on time of season, angle, amount ofsunlight, wind direction, direction & size of deer. I think that's about it...

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

As the others have said, condition is everything. But also, am I shooting from the ground or in a stand. In perfect conditions if I felt comfortable, and I was on the ground,I would throw an arrow up to 60 yards. My highest pin is 80 yards and I can shoot a group of 6 in the 10 ring from 60,,,, but that is perfect conditions. I only pray that the situation only comes up a couple of times in my life. I would take a 20 yard kill on a nice deer any day over a 60 yard shot at the same caliber deer. For some reason, I am alot more comfortable shooting long distances from the ground. Just my opinion.

I will shoot 60yds without second guessing myself, as long as I have a range finder.

Two of my buddies shot elk 2yrs ago @ 67 and 76 yds!

I shot a buck at 40+ last year and hit it good, but I would only take that shot at a large chested animal.

motownhonkey, do u know what arrow speed u have at 40 yards?
270 fps.....thats fast right? well do u know what speed a whitetail has as a reaction time?
....
....
....
1100 fps. so i don't care what bow u shoot a wt can always move before your arrow gets 120 feet!
i am not saying i have not shot 40 yards or saying it is bad, just understand a deer can and will move faster than your arrow can shoot!;)

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

I wouldn't shoot past 25-30 yards right now. And before you ask Data, even if a 180' der was standing at 32.1 yards away I wouldn't shoot right now. Why? For one, I am really not into horns right now and I would rather not gut shot or clip any animal. For 2, I am just not that good of a shot out at 30+ yards and my range estimation is not great at best. I tend to overestimate how far things are away so if I thought a deer was over 30 yards away, I just wouldn't shoot. Could I hit it at 35 or even 40 yards? Well with the Stealth shooting pretty much flat out to 30 yards, yeah, and in the killzone but I don't TRUST myself enough in that moment with the adrenaline pumping , the muscles stiff and cold from sitting/standing all day. It would make me sick to clip any animal out that far when I knew in my heart and my head that it wasn't a smart shot for me to take.

Well, I had a monster Kansas 10 pointer at about 45-50 yards last year and I actually was pretty calm because I'd been watching him for maybe 5 minutes. He was 10-15 yards from getting an arrow through the lung toos, and he never knewit.Very brushy creek draw he was in, no way I could get a shot where he stood. That buck lived ....... he'll be a 200" buck this year and I get to hunt him !! (thats my horn porn kicking in ;))

IL Rancher - My point is, in the woods, you don't really ever try and calculate if a deer is +/- a yard of your personal effective range. You see a deer, decide to shoot and when then moment feels right, you take the shot knowing you can make it. That isn't a hard line of 25 yards max, or 35 yards max - its bowhunting, its taking a shot when you feel you can make it.

HNIJustin - would you take a million.1 shot ? And until you drop the the training wheels, your bow DOES NOT kick my bows tail :D Shoot a real bow this weekend and be humbled [&:]

Iknow but it doesn't matter. Whatever the distance is.... it's MY distance. Yours probably is or should be entirely different. No way do I think I should impose my standards on anyone else. It might handicap them or exceed their practical limits. Those limits are not only distance but also moral and ethical... which is again different than mine. To me a deer is a deer .... to some they're Gods... to others they're targets.... to others they're pests. We have to decide and calulate our own limitations. Those limitations will change with time, conditions, etc. And as the man said, "A man's got to know his limitations".[8D]

allseason, if you're shooting any game at 60 yards with a bow, you need to find a better guide or take up bowling.[:@]

On an Elk or Moose I would not hesitate to take a 60 yder - if it everything was right

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

Why does it matter to you Data if I do or not? Why would you single me out over everyone else? Whats up yourass with Oneida? Just because they are ugly? Did you get screwed over by the previous owner of Oneida or something? Or is it that I support a high fenced ranch? Honestly, no I wouldn't. I don't trust my set up out past 25 yards. Yes, it may kill a deer, but I doubt I would get a pass through, and my arrow is too slow. By the time I shot and the arrow got there, the deer could have already turned 180 degrees, and I could gut shoot it, and the trophy be lost forever.I may be young, but I don't take bad shots.

The reason Im finally answering is because I just now seen you were saying anything to me, Data. I just did a search on "Oneida" and I seen you had a problem with Oneida, so I thought I would address it.

for me it depends on how big the animal is. last year i never shot over 25 yards. but if it is a monster buck and i know he isn't coming any closer...i will probably take the shot if it's offered.

Zach
Not trying to bust your hoo-haas, but thats not the right approach. It shouldnt matter how big, or if its a buck or doe. Respect the animal, and only take shots you are comfortable with, and which you are certain you can make a clean quick kill.

By the way, my range varies. I feel comfortable out to about 50, (practice to 75-80)but my setup isnt producing enough KE out there,. So I keep it under approx. 35 yards.Probably 90% ofmy shots are under 15 yards anyhow.

Oh so true what words of wisdom you put forth. Finally someone I can relate to you shoot what you shoot because you can. 50 years from now when bows will be faster, lighter hunters will beshooting 100yds and some will complain about guys shooting 120yds.[/blockquote]

I would say the furthest shot i would take would be in the 20-25 yards range. I just started shooting not to long ago so i still dont got my shots down packed. Out at 20 yards im hitting inside a 2" circle (With broadheads) but i never get to practice out at 30 because i dont have the space behind my house. But i get my drivers license in 2 days and im going to start going to an outdoor range that has targets out up to 80 yards. [8D]

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

I have a new stand site this year that is set to take game out of up to 45 yrds. I am practising to take that shot if I have to. I will take it if what I think is going to be there is what I think it is. It should come with in 25-30, but I'll be ready. So to answer the question, it depends on the site and me in this case.

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

I dont ever really shoot over 30 yards. I had a decent buck staring at my friend in a tree 35 yards broadside.. I thought about it.. decided to pass on it. 2 weeks later I nailed a 7 pointer(my 3rd 7 pointer in as many years) at 12 yards.

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

Assuming we are talking whitetail deer, 30 yards would be my limit.

Woodman 454 07-31-2005 08:20 PM

RE: How Far Would you shoot at An Animal?

In theory, 25-30 yards is my limit. In practice however I will admit that I have shot farther than this. A lot farther.... Good news is I have a 100% shot to kill ratio and have recovered 100% of the game I shot....... Thats 1 Shot, 1Kill, 1 Freezer full of tasty Vittles!

Saturday was my first day shooting and I was getting 3 inch groups at 20 yds. and I shot Sunday and got some pretty tight groups (easily within the kill zone)at 30 yds. I figure by the end of this month I should be able to take a deer out to 80-90 yards. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

30-35 for me, there is just to many things that can go wrong when you start shooting too far...
