Trapper,
Put it in Topo mode. You may have to zoom out once, but when in Topo it may say the names of certain elevations or rivers or whatever, and you could work from their. It is not possible to pick out your deer stand tho.:(

What sort of "things" are you looking for? Are you looking for funnels or spots to scout or are you looking for your truck in the front yard?

If I were to scout the topo map I'd be looking in the bottom right corner. Along that ridge, on the little "shelf" on the ridge about 1cm up from the bottom and 1cm in from the right. That looks promising.

Are you looking for a place to scout out and hunt? I guess I'm not certain what exactly it is you define by "things". from a post in the hunting forum I was led to believe you were looking for funnels.I'd check the lower right hand corner of the map. If there is a brook that runs along that ridge I'd get out the hip boots and walk the length of the brook. I've used this method to find where the deer concentrate their brook crossing. Often, one spot is prefered for one reason or another and either side of that crossing can be very productive.

Another spot I would check out, about half way up and a quarter of the way in from the left. The ridge jetts out and flattetens and wider on the map. Look around in that area for condensed movement.

Basically what you're looking for is a terraine feature or obstical such as a lake or river. A fence row between two fields or a finger of woods that jetts out into a field areboth classic funnel. The aerial photo is only a general guide and althought it can be helpful it can also be misleading. Most of the aerial photos are fairly old. (10 years or more) So needless to say what you see may not be what you find.

Read the topo and get some ideas of where to look and then put your shoes on and go take a look.

trapper, you only posted one section of the whole map. It doesn't show enough of the surrounding area to see anything. Go back to the web site and post the entire url from the address bar. Don't right click on the image to get the url because the whole map is actually a bunch of small images so you are only posting a link to a piece of the map. If we can see the whole thing we may be able to help a little more. Just a suggestion.

I think this is what you said would be better.

There is a bit of a saddle right in the middle, near the double dotted line, I am guessing is a power line? Also, a pretty good hill top field funnel on top of the hill, lower center, nest to the big circle. Pardon the wording, but the ridge running between what looks like 2 brea.....you get the idea...straight north from the bottom edge center, about 2 inches.

Holy Crappola.... where do we begin. First off, some great looking country side if you're into climbing hills.[8D] The map tells you everything about the lay of the land, where the ridges are, where the slopes are more gentle, which way is upstream, or up valley, how steep the hills are, easiest travel routes for deer and man, openings in the woods if the map is new enough etc etc etc. If you have NO IDEA how to read a map, do a google search for basic orienteering or map reading or both. Start there. There is not enough space on this site to lead you around this map. With terrain like this with that much change in elevation and so many hilltops etc, map reading is really easy. It gets tough when you get into flat land and contour lines never seem to change that it gets hard. I've seen all I need to see,.... I want to hunt your woods.[8D]
