A great day....
Well, to follow up on my post yesterday about my 60yrd pin. I am once again crushing the shoulder on my Blue Ridge Target at 60yrds. 70yrds I hold at the top of the shoulder on the target and hit about 5inches low, but right on the money. I also purchased a Flambeu Bow Case today.
Sunday I'm going to the Bow Shop, getting my cable re-served, and I will be pleased, and ready for Season! |
RE: A great day....
Nothing like practicing at those distances and actually hitting the kill zone, CONSISTENTLY!!!!!!!!!! Almost seems like a 20yd shot should be illegal after practicing at 60yds.

Ok, 60 and 70 yard shots are just stupid, and shooting a deer in the shoulder is even more stupid. It is very hard to get penetration in the shoulder at short distances never the less at 60 to 70 yard shots. For the sake of the deer keep at LEAST under 40. Their is a lot of stuff you cannot see from 60-70 yards ie. tree limbs and such!

Calm down there fool, I was referring to practicing, not hunting.

Those are pretty impressive distances to be consistent at. Good luck in your hunting endeavors this season.

RE: A great day....
Belle,
I was talking about High Country talking about "Crushing the shoulder" and none of my reply was directed to you. Just though I would clear that up. High Country, Aim for just Behind the shoulder. It will kill the deer much easier then IN the shoulder. I saw a deer that had and arrow in its shoulder last year, and the arrow had only penetrated only 2-3 inches. Aim for the heart/lungs and if you hit the deer there, you cannot go wrong! |
RE: A great day....
For me 60 yards is down right stupid. However for a guy who is use to practicing the yardage, know his equipment, etc. it may not be! Their is a competition guy in this area who holds 30 records for shooting, he said he has and feels confident shooting an animal to 70 Yards(with a range finder for exact yardage)...but again he practices at 90 meters and hits the 10 ring...so he knows how to shoot, wind, equipment and his bow to a T. Just b/c I am not confident beyond 40 yards, doesn't mean an accopmlished archer who is....IS STUPID! As for penetration at that distance with the bows & tech. today....if placed in the ribs(H/L) I can't see why it wouldn't do the job! Again not saying I would ever shoot at anything over 40 that is my outside max and in fact I have never even attempted a shot of that length on game, but if I was an accomplished archer who could put it into the basket at 70 yards, I knew how to judge the climate situation, predict possible arrow flight, exact yardage and so on...why not?

RE: A great day....
Hell,
Number One: I don't want to make anyone mad on this board. I enjoy posting and reading your replies. Number Two: I have never attempted a shot over 40-50yrds. But if the situation ever came up...I would not be afraid to shoot the 50yrd or 60yrd shot. I know my ability, and my equipment. Number Three: I didn't mean directly in the shoulder. I always aim two inches behind the shoulder because I shoot mechanical broadheads. I just mean, that when I say crushed the shoulder, that I was connecting around the shoulder where I was aiming. I hope that clears everything up. |
RE: A great day....
And oh by the way....60yrds is a incredible shot. It takes time, skill, and patience to dial in at 60yrds. I'm very proud of myself for getting my 60yrd pin dialed in and forming good groups. Anyone that attempts to line up a 60yrd pin, and is has success is a great archer in my mind.
Just my opinion. Oh yeah, those 40yrd, 30yrd, and 20yrd shots all become alittle easier after standing at 60. |

RE: A great day....
60 yards is not uncommon in the 3D community and before you go patting yourself on the back, grouping at 60 yards makes you a decent shot, it doesn't necessarily make you a great archer. I've been shooting 60 yards for years, grouping Muzzys at that distance and I truly doubt I ever attempt that shot on deer, even with a rangefinder. I guarantee I can make it but is the deer going to be standing perfectly still when the arrow arrives, I doubt it. I was 12 ringing elk targets prior to my elk hunt at 70 yards and prayed I didn't get a shot offered like that, I'd passed. Fortunately I shot my bull elk at 33 yards and in the black forest, that was a long shot.
Congrat's on grouping at longer distances, it does make the shorter shots easier but the shorter ones are missed by the best shots because they take it for granted, remember that. Take each shot as serious as the next, especially on live game, each one counts the same. Being a great archer is passing animals at 60 yards and hunting them another day and connecting under 20 on the same animal. Eccessively long shots on game just makes you a good shot, not a great archer and even less than a great bowhunter.
