RE: when do you see your first tree rubs??

Monsterbuckland, I am like you in that I generally don't find rubs until October.....the first or second week. But I attribute part of that due to not getting into the heavy timbered areas. I skirt the edges of crop fields when scouting to look for trails entering the fields so what rubs I might find early are traveling rubs, small saplings and brush.

Here in Mississippi the rut doesn't kick in to around Dec.15 - Jan 1. However, I usually start seing rubs well before then usually in mid to late October. As such, I wouldn't think it is unusual for you to start seing rubs now with the run only about 2 months away.

You will see a few rubs now here in Iowa. The major rubs come in a couple of weeks though, and the rut is in mid-November.

Guys,

Our bow season opened a week ago and the bucks are really tearing the trees up now (hadn't got to hunt much though-rained practically every day). Where I hunt we have been passing all of the smaller bucks up for the past couple of years and have harvested several does so we should see alot of improvement to the buck/doe ratio. Also the bucks should be getting some size in their racks now. Last year we passed up a couple of 13&quot; wide 8 pters so I'm really looking forward to seeing those deer again (if I can tell that's them when I see them again). I personally passed up a dozen smaller bucks, havesting 2-16&quot; wide 8 pters. Several of the thumb-sized bushes have been rung off, and the woods is filling up with hornings. Deer season IS LOOKING PROMISING FOR THIS YEAR IN NE GA.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Good huntin to you fellas,

GB

Well I am in NJ and I haven't seen any so far. But I know the bucks don't have velvet anymore so they should be some kind of rubs somewhere but not many so far. I think about the first or second week of oct. there will be more.

This past Wednesday I found some fresh rubs on my way into my stand. This tells me bucks are here, already new that because I saw a nice one sneak thru this morning. The rub line I found has been on the same trail for three years now. Just never been there when the bucks are cruising thru.

As long as kids are having fun shooting, I don't care if I shoot bad

They are rubbing a little now in Virginia but I think it is more to scratch an itch from the velvet than due to the rut.

Right now they're whacking our trees pretty hard. 2 weeks ago they were in full velvet and hadn't touched them. They're just cleaning off some velvet now. Not the serious bush shredding they do later.

hye monsterbuck. I too am western newyork, here in rochester and well i can't attest to seeing rubs on trees yet, my buddies can. I was at the sabre game this past saturday night so i couldn't go out into the woods with my buddies to check on our scrapes. But, from what i hear, it is good. In my area i have a railroad track about 75 yards from me, and between me and the tracks there is a nice thick brush with a ton of trails funneling into one that goes right accross my stand at 20 yards. These trails funnel in from the left ( just tryin to paint a picture here). well where the trails all start to funnel, is pretty much open and if had to i could make a shot at 30 yards with no problem except reaching over my back to get an angle. In this little open area there are quite a few small tress the biggest beeing no more than 8 inches in circumference and beeing about 10-15 ft high. Well from what my buddies are telling me is that there are a few rubs rooming around in that part but nothing has touched my mock scrape yet. There have been deer at my buddies scrapes (of which i made for them) but nothing has come to visit mine. Anyway i'm going out monday to check it and add more sent. Good luck, be safe, and as always

Just a little tid-bit for thoes who are unaware; those first couple of rubs you see are usually from the dominant animal in the area. The dominant bucks are not only removing velvet, they are establishing territory in order to break up the bachelor groups of summer. These rubs are signposts, saying, &quot;We are no longer buddies. Cross this line and get a butt-whippin!&quot;
