RE: How many acres do you hunt?
3 private properties.
250 acres with about 240 being big woods 100 acres with about 80 being crop fields 10 acres exclusively wooded |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?
I have two properties that I hunt. One consists of 160 acres 40 of it being field and most of it is completely surrounded by state land and the other is 167 acres that has probably 40 acres total of 3 farm fields spread out over the property. The first property is bordered by a lot of popple thickets and big woods, not many deer but still a challenge to hunt. The second is property that has been in my family for almost 100 years and it is very diversified between its thick swamps and oaks, it is very close to home and has a pretty good population of deer. We just had both properties cut within the last 3 years and it seems to be paying off along with the food plots we have planted.

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
How many private land acres do you have permission / access to? How many of those acres do you have exclusive permission on? How would the acreage break down? Ex. How many acres of the properties are fields, woods etc etc. Of those I have exclusive permission on approximately 3140 acres. It breaks down to 498 acres family farm...2200 acres friend of family... 400 acres uncles farm... 40 acres a gentleman I work with. These acreages I have exclusive rights to hunt... I allow a my brother, sister, and a couple close friends to hunt these w/ me. The rest I share rights with other local hunters. The small 40 acre patch is however one that only my brother and I hunt and is restricted to bowhunting only and is one in which we have taken some of our larger bucks off of. |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?
WOW.... I can't believe the size of properties most of you guys get to hunt! PLENTY of land to kill mature deer consistently!! Properties around here mostly consist of 20 to 100 acres of "huntable cover" (no need to count tillable) and generally each tract is shared by other hunters. I hunt several properties but only have exclusive access to our own tract of just less than 100 acres of timber, it's bordered by 280 acres of CRP and beyond that.... hundreds of acres of corn. Outfitters and high dollar leases make the workin' man hunts nearly impossible these days! Good luck to all of in keeping what you have!

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
I have permission on a few local farms that are all in the 140 - 200 acre range. I have permission to a couple more smal (5-10 acres) wooded areas that have a LOT of deer travelling through them at times. These small areas are in the middle of much bigger lands and are adjacent to farm fields.

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
the public places i hunt range from probably 20,000 acres to 60,000 but don't quote me on that...it's way up there.
my dad n law also has a 150 acres but i only hog hunt out there a couple times a year. this year we'll also be hunting a new lease in georgia that has 990acres...only 10hunters. |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
How many private land acres do you have permission / access to?
300 acres on two private farms. How many of those acres do you have exclusive permission on? Neither but limited access to both. How would the acreage break down? Ex. How many acres of the properties are fields, woods etc etc. Woods - 100 acres Fields - 200 The mix is good as there are no very large fields just several meandering through the woods. |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?
I have 20 acres of my own that I hunt, 16 acres of that is pretty much a food plot (hay) about 4 acres of that is a creek that winds through the back part of my property and then the house area is roughly 2 acres (the deer come around the house, but I prefer to just watch if they are near the house). My neighbor farms and he has 1000 acres of tillable land surounded by wooded area. Needless to say I have seen quite a few deer on my property, and have been planting tees along the border in an attempt to create a deer sanctuary.

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
I belong to a hunting club and we own (us & the bank) 2,400 acres in NW Arkansas. About 50 acres is fields, clearcuts, and food plots. About 600 acres has been logged out (>16" trees) over the past 3 years. Opened up the understory quite a lot. Another 900 acres is being logged over the next couple of years. We are turning a lot of logging staging areas into food plots. We're currently building a new camp house, reclaiming a 7 acre lake that has silted in over time, building another 5-6 acre lake, building some ponds and putting in more food plots.
We've got deer, bear, hogs, bobcat, coyotes (of course), and various small game. We have a self imposed 4Pts on one side rule. firstshot ------------------------------------------ Make your first shot count! |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?
well the farmer that me and a friend hunt on is right around 1500 acres. but about 800 is wooded and able to hunt. it is great land to hunt on, lots of deer and many food sources for the deer. including clover, corn, soy beans, alfalfa, hay, and wheat.

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
not a lot of land is privately owned up here compared to the public land available, I put my backpack on, start hiking and in one day I am in areas that I never see another hunter.

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
My friend and hunting buddy has 11 acres with his house on it. 10 acres are wooded with a stream running through it. It is surrounded by woods and farm land so it's a nice deer highway so to speak.
I also hunt a lot of public land. |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?
4,000 acres of private land.
3,800 of which is wooded. 200 is dedicated to alfalfa. I also hunt public land. In my previous post I mentioned we used to hunt 4,500 acres which was reduced to 150 due to the selling of the majority of the land. Since then we've gained permission from the new landowner to hunt 4,000 acres of his land. |
RE: How many acres do you hunt?
Here in Lake County, IL I have access to several hundred acres of land that my dad and I have sole deer hunting rights to. Unfortunately we're swamped with trespassers - both hunters and non-hunters, and nearly every piece of land surrounding us is built up with homes and they keep closing in tighter and tighter on us. Unfortunately we don't have permission to hunt all of the land owned by the people who give us permission - mostly due to past bad experiences with hunters in the past. :( Although we do get a little bit more and more permission every year, we have plenty of spots to go and lots of big deer to shoot at.
![]() Myself, Christine, and a buddy of mine also picked up a 112 acre lease down in Effingham County this year as well. I'll be making a few trips down there this fall, but I'd really like to concentrate my efforts here at home. We saw some monsters last year that I'm sure are only going to be bigger this fall. Although I do have a nice 5 day trip planned to Effingham Nov 5th - 9th. ![]() |

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
I share a lease with my brother in law. It is just over 300 acres, about a 50-50 mix of unimproved pasture and woods. The woods are mostly oaks with a mix of cedar and mesquite. There is also a patch of cedar bottom that is about 25 acres. The owner of the property has a brother that hunts it about 2 or 3 times a year during rifle season. I am allotted about 150 acres for myself. My brother in law has been hunting this place for 20 years so he gets what he thinks is the good half, however with all the work I'm doing he may be in for a surprise!

RE: How many acres do you hunt?
I only hunt private land. I don't own any of it(bummer)
3 farms in NE Iowa about 750 acres each, fields but lots of wooded draws and a creek. 1 farm 30 miles south of these, 800 acres, fields but plenty of woods 1 creek with strips on timber on both sides. Only 8 miles from my house. I have exclusive permission on all the farms for bow and early ML season, others hunt it during the shotgun season(I don't hunt shotgun season) then it's all mine again till season ends. I hunt the land with my main hunting partner, he will be 70 this year(I'm 42) his son hunts with us a few times per year when he find the cupboard his wife keeps his balls in and goes with us anyway. I also started taking a younger guy with us 3 years ago after he was complaining about the public land around being too crowded. |
