bow for a youth
 

My 7 year old nephew is interested in learning the fun sport of shooting bows. I just need some ideas of what kind of bow would be good for him. I was thinking maybe a youth hunter longbow but are there any compounds that would be good for that age? If comes down to it, i'll get him one but keep it in storage until he gets older but i figured i might as well ask around and get some ideas. Thanks :)

I think a good light weight longbow would be good for a small kid...... That is what I plan to start my son on and then let him ease into compounds if he wants..

My sons first bow was a cheap longbow package deal. That was when he was like 4 years old. I Then got him a Browning Micro Midas II. I paid $215 for the package. Pretty decent bow for a youngster!

I have had to replace the arrows a few times but thats about it. We have to go into the shop and get it adjusted for him this week, and new arrows! He just had a pretty good growing spurt!:D It zings the arrows pretty good, I was surprised! The boy loves his bow, he's 9 now!

The Golden Eagle Brave is a great starter bow. My son also has a Micro Midas, and it is awesome!! But, I just wonder if your 7 y/o could pull 30 pounds?

I know he is pretty strong but as of him pulling 30 lbs i don't know. I know he tried to pull back my bow but couldn't do it with two hands (I shoot 65 lbs) but I'll find out.

I started out with a micro midas. Once you crank the draw weight and length, that thing can just zing those arrows!:D

Mathews Genesis is a great youth bow as well because it's incredibly adjustable both length and poundage wise, so he won't grow out of it right away. I'm not sure if it's small enough for a 7 year old or not, but I would certainly suggest looking into it.

EDIT - They also have a Mini-Genesis that is available in 6-12 lbs. The Genesis is 10-20 lbs.

30 lbs is ridiculous. A 7 year old will DESTROY themself trying to pull too much weight.

Find a reputable proshop, and they're gonna steer you towards something under 15 lbs.


As for a decent YOUTH bow, I just bought my oldest son a Hoyt RinTec. Set at 32 lbs, it will fling arrows nearly as fast as my old 70lbs. PSE (for 15 yards or so. ) It goes from 18-26" draw length, 20-50# weight, 6 3/8" brace, 33 1/4 ata, weight 2 pounds 14 oz's, and at 50# @ 26" is IBO rated at 270FPS.

This new Hoyt bow is worth checking out if you are willing to drop 400+ on a package for your kid.

(wish I had a bow this nice to learn on... my first real bow was a Hoyt pro-hunter 45# recurve. )
