String Silencers
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were as to what the best string silencer is? I need to get some new ones and don't know what to get. Thanks for all the help!

RE: String Silencers
I would definetly say that there are pros and cons to every string silencer. I would definetly look to a non-moisture absorbing type. Right now I am using string leeches, and they work good. However they won't last as long as a lot of other pruducts. Hope that helps.

RE: String Silencers
Hold out until sims gets their leeches out that are kevlar reinforced.....this could possibly be their best product since limbsavers if they will actually last 500-1000 shots.
|
RE: String Silencers
I am with you on this one stinky! Their fist generation leeches sucked.
|
RE: String Silencers
I really hope that there is no smoke blowing. The leaches work and I like them because they don't get tangled or get wet ... but.

RE: String Silencers
Whats wrong with good old cats whiskers??
Even with the kevlar the leeches are not a really viable for me cause lets say they last 1000 shots thats only 20 days before I have to shell out who knows how much for a new set. LOOK OUT SKIPPY HERE I COME. |
RE: String Silencers
Cat Whiskers are OK, but I had a bad experience once with snow and ice buildup on them once. Especially at the base where they go through the string, and where the whiskers split. I could remove the snow and ice between most the whiskers, but not all of it. I can't say that I consistantly hunt in snow all season or anything like that, but the one experience made me try try the leeches. I like them a lot, but they don't last. Always pros and cons in everything.

RE: String Silencers
How do you know when silencers of any type are wearing out. will hte bow sound louder or can you actually tell on the silencer, is there actually wear and tear on it?

RE: String Silencers
They say the leeches come apart and fly off. The wiskers are what I use and don't bother with the other junk. They last until they dry up and deteriorate and start coming off. It takes a long time for that. Well worth the money.
|
RE: String Silencers
Mic, they will actually break and fly off the bow. They could be good for one shot and break the next. When they break it is always during a shot. (leeches)
|
RE: String Silencers
Not blowing smoke.. :) They are really coming out with them. I heard it on one of these BBS and e-mailed them and it was confirmed. They SHOULD be out sometime this summer. And honestly I don't know how many shots they will last they just said "significantly longer."
|
RE: String Silencers
The new Sims String leeches should be out real soon. kevlar should last a long time....depends on how much they have in them & stuff like that. I will give them a try once I see a pack out just for the heck of it. I'll post a review once I get a set. For now cat whiskers work fine for me.

RE: String Silencers
what exactly are cat whiskers? Is that a name brand? Or what are some brands of them? Are they cloth or rubber or some of each?

RE: String Silencers
Leeches by Simms
Put them on before you go hunting, and they should last you long enough. If your shooting 1000 shots a week....why do you need silencers? That said, Alpine has a version of the leeches made out of some silicon concoction http://www.alpinearchery.com/limb_tam_glide_slide.asp Edited by - Stealth_Force on 04/21/2002 02:40:49 |
RE: String Silencers
For simplcity's sake, Mic, catwhiskers are the same as a spinner bait skirt. Matter of fact, that's what I use. You can get them in lots of different colors at a good bait shop.

RE: String Silencers
I never heard of putting Catwiskers through the string.
I use either thread of a nock point to tie/clamp the catwisker to the string and then pull it apart just like making a spinnerbait. I never have snow or ice problems.(I live and hunt in Ohio and we have plenty of both <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> ) No string damage because the wisker is around, not through and easy to replace in the field. RE: String Silencers
The string leeches are a good product in my opinion. They dont last a long time, but, they dont reduce speed as much as cat whiskers and others do. I have seen cat whiskers take as much as 10 fps off of some bows regardless of where you position them on the string. That kind of speed loss is quite significant in my opinion. The leeches will only dock you 1 or 2 fps.

RE: String Silencers
Has anyone tried the "string things" from Alpine Archery? Looks like they could be an answer. Curious about them myself.
|
RE: String Silencers
yea. has anyone tried the string thing???? it looks pretty good to me..
small but deadly |
RE: String Silencers
Looks like I'll have to spend some money and get these Alpine things for a field test. Then I can post and say what my findings are. Alpine is coming out with some very innovative stuff lately IMO.

RE: String Silencers
Cat whiskers, or my favorite, Tarantulas.
|
RE: String Silencers
I tried the string leeches when they first came out and i think that they are a good product but there downfall is that they dont last very long. I try to shoot at least 4 times a week and every day during the season and found that the whiskers hold up alot longer even though they do slow your arrow down a little bit more

RE: String Silencers
Well, as I said, I spent some money and got the Alpine string-things. The jury is still out. They don't seem to do quite as good a job as leeches, but they are still on the string and in one piece. I don't have them served in as I have a lot of twists in the string. They have a tendency to turn 90 degrees. That is, when you put them in they are more or less horizontal. They want to turn and face vertical. But they are still there and doesn't seem to matter. I chrono'd the bow and lost a whopping 3 fps, about the same as the leeches.
Also got the Alpine limb savers for split-limb. Now these are definitely different. No plastic grommets, no screws and no rubber glued to the plastic. Just a silicon thing that easily twists onto the limbs. My fear was that it would move around or slide on the limbs, but that hasn't been the case. I can't seem to be able to tell a difference between them and Simms, and at about $8 cheaper I think they are the better product. If I encounter any other data I'll post again. |
RE: String Silencers
I personally like the string leeches. I know that they come apart after awhile but they really work well to silence the string. The new ones are even better.

RE: String Silencers
Have any of you tried the new BowTech string silencers? BowTech claims that they will not slow the string down.
I use catwiskers as they've always been super durable, and functional, but If the BowTech ones work as promised, it might be worth looking at. Hunt Alaska! |
RE: String Silencers
I need some new string silencers too since the cat whiskers I had on there deteriorated off quicker than usual. Would the string silencers be effective in helping to silence the cables as well?
|
RE: String Silencers
I don't know how many years I have used cats whiskers but they have never let me down.
I have never put them through the string. I just serve them on with serving thread. I too used to hunt in Ohio and Indiana with them as well as here in Washington State and in spite of the weather . . . have never had them freeze up on me. Bowhunter |
RE: String Silencers
Again, I feel compelled to see if anyone else has tried BowTech's new string silencers.
Not being a nag or anything, but I'm being pushed to buy some, and was hoping for info before I have to make the choice. Thanks Hunt Alaska! |
RE: String Silencers
I use cat whiskers too, string leeches wear out way to fast & are not worth the money. I run my whiskers throught the string & then serve them into the string......they never move & seem to help stop a little bit more twang by doing this....heck it's not worth the effort to run them your string to be honest!
