Broadhead debate
 

I have finally decided that i am going to use a fixed blade broadhead this fall for hunting. This is due to the fact that my zone in MN no longer allows anyone age 18 and older to harvest an antlerless dear for any season(archery, firearms, or muzzleloader). I figure I will only get a few chances at a buck so i want as few variable as possible. Anyways I have narrowed my choices down to two types. Type one is a one piece three blade design such as the G5 Montec, Magnus Snuffer SS, and the NAP HellRazor. The other type is a two blade with bleeders on either side such as the Magnus Stinger, Muzzy Phantom, and the NAP Razorback. Any comments or suggestions on the different types/brands would be much appreciated.

I prefer a four blade head, take a look at Slick Tricks. They are an all steel, tough as nails, short, proven head that flies like no other, and the blade thickness is .035".

I would put a Slick Trick up against any braodhead made.

Strength, blade sharpness, wound size, flight characteristics, penetration. I have never seen a broadhead combine all of these attributes into one single broadhead like a Slick Trick does. To top it off Garry and the rest of the company are fantastic people that stand behind their product 100%.

Have killed dozens of deer over the years with the Razorback, had pass thru's on all but one (severe qtring away shot that clipped bone). Am trying out the Muzzy phantom this year, have yet to kill anything with it, but it flys great out to 60 yards.

I looked at the slick tricks on cabelas and read the reviews. I liked what i read and there were very few complaints that came from people that were shooting very fast bows. My bow is set at 65lbs. with a 28" draw. My arrow weighs right round 500 grains. I dont know for sure what the speed of my arrow is but i dont think it is fast enough to cause problems. The only other thing that concerned me is that they said the heads whistled or hissed in flight. Have you heard this? Do the deer seem to mind before they meet their maker? Sorry for all the questions but i will only be able to hunt for a month before i leave for basic training and i just found out that in my area of minnesota i can only take a buck. no antlerless permits will be given to anyone age 18 and over. I dont want to waste my time or my money on a head that will spook the dear or not work well when the time comes.

None of the deer I have killed with them have heard them coming. They quickly became the best selling fixed blade head I stock for good reason.

FWIW there are a whole bunch of heads that make noise when traveling through the air. In fact if you stand about half way down range (obviously behind something arrow proof) of someone shooting a field tipped arrow you would be surprised how loud an arrow is any way. You can hear the bow release, a loud buzzing/hissing sound as the arrow passes you and then a thawap when it hits the target.

thanks for all the help. i am pretty much sold on the slick tricks. after doing a little digging i found that the heads i was looking at seemed to have some problems with either sharpness or not flying straight. I will report back as soon as i can as to how the slick tricks work for me.

nice vids tex. Might try with plywood rather than 1 bys though. The solid planks are inconsistent in there density. Like in vid three or four when you split the plank in half then stuck one in the remaining piece. You won't get a consistent showing of penetration. just my opinion though.

Magnus does make a nice head though.

What if you aim a little low? If the deer jumps the string, maybe due to hearing the arrow coming, it'll drop down and get it in the lungs, if not, you've got 4 blades cutting the arteries around the heart.
