Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your shoulder. I've been down the same road as you.

Concerning what crossbow...I must say you are quick to jump straigth into the fire! The best advice I can give you is to take your time, go to a few places and shoot a few, and buy what you want when you find it.

I chose Excalibur for the following reasons:

I can change a string in the field without having to use some fancy bowpress.

Lifetime Warranty

Very simple to use with very good trigger pull (3.5 lbs)

Lightweight, and easy to hold.

Accu-Draw Bow ****ing System works well with them.

Hope some of this helps,

Joel

I am not a big crossbow fan, not that I am against them for hunting, just that I don't much care for how loud and cumbersome most are. That said I have shot a bunch of them and my personal favorites are the Excaliburs. They seem to be the most quiet and "handy" of those that I have tried. They are also easy to work on yourself.

excals are real nice as stated above but are expensive, most crossbows are.
if money is important i would look at used HORTON crossbow.i seen some for 250 dollars used .
HORTON makes fine crossbows and you can get parts.
excals are just plain great but hard to find a used one.
