40+ yards
Has anyone ever taken a shot at a deer. At 40+ yards with a bow. If so did you have any secsuss.

RE: 40+ yards
And what type of broad heads did you use.

RE: 40+ yards
nope...and probably never will...atleast hunting in the woods of PA. i practice out to 40. hopefully 50 and 60 this year...but in the woods everything would have to be absolutely perfect for me to take a shot over my first pin(20yd pin..good till about 25ish) no wind, brush, known yardage etc would be the only way id do it. if your off a couple yards at 40+ your talking a matter of inches of drop...im good at guessing...but if i come up 5 yards hot and shoot 45 and its 40 im going to be 4 or so inches too high...thats no good...and even then...thats alot more time of arrow flight for the deer to move...
i do practice out at 40+ but i highly doubt i'll ever take game that far. thats the fun of bowhuntin...gettin them in close...but i guess out west thats common practice...im confident i can kill a foam deer in my nicely mowed yard at 40...but not a live one |
RE: 40+ yards
40 yards? No..
30 yards? Yes, on the run.....Don't ask me how I did it, but I did it |
RE: 40+ yards
I killed one at 51 yards two years ago. I was using a wasp boss bullet. Arrow entered inbetween the last two ribs and exited through the offside shoulder, arrow stuck in the ground like it didnt touch anything except it was covered in blood so I knew it did go through something. I think the deer went maybe 50 yards or so and tipped over.

RE: 40+ yards
I would this year lots of practice up to 70 yards, shooting the G5 montec
|
RE: 40+ yards
42 yards with the G-5 very clear no obstructions.

RE: 40+ yards
I have taken a couple at 50ish mark. Used Rocket Miniblasters on two of them and a Punchcutter on one. Both are mechanical heads. The Punchcutter is no longer in production. It was one of the first mechanicals back around the early 90's.
I took a shot at a doe that was walking at 15 yds. but hit her back too far. She went about 50 yds and bedded down. After a bit she stood up and started to walk away. She stood in the open at 50yds. I put the next arrow where the first one should have went. I don't recommend shooting that far unless you practice those kind of yardages and farther. Also only take that shot when conditions are perfect. |
RE: 40+ yards
Normally like to keep my shots at 40 or less. But I had a perfect opportunity for a 50 yarder a couple of years back. I was shooting a Muzzy 3 blade, 100gr - with my bow shooting around 240 FPS.
The broadhead actually went through the front shoulder bone and directly through the heart and stuck out through the rib cage on the other side⦠I actually saved some pics of the broadhead. It got dung up going through all that bone, but it still did the job! http://www.southdakotahunter.com/pics/broadhead1.jpg http://www.southdakotahunter.com/pics/broadhead2.jpg |
RE: 40+ yards
Practice, practice, practice and you will feel comfortable at longer yardages. I practice at 50 and 60 yards every other day and am ready to try the long shot.

RE: 40+ yards
one guy at the local archery shop took a doe at 77 yards last year but he puts in alot of time
|
RE: 40+ yards
First deer on the left was taken at 46 yards, 2nd deer from the left was taken at 42 yards. 55 grain high country broadhead, arrow, and bow. Both deer did not travel over 25 yards.

RE: 40+ yards
i heard if you practice out to 60 or 70 yards it will make 30 to 40 yrd shots easier is this true?
|
RE: 40+ yards
Wow,nice trophy room Bowhunter2001. At first I thought I was seeing the interior of a bar, Sportsmans Warehouse or something. Nice collection, are they all yours, or a partnership?

RE: 40+ yards
I have never shot past 33 yards.

RE: 40+ yards
OK. I have taken three deer at long ranges. I took one a 50 yards, one at 70 yards, and one at 80 yards. First, let me say that I had someone with me on each occasion. And secondly, let me also say that this was several years ago and I was shooting the 3-D Circiuit hard. I probably was shooting 500 arrows a week or more. I practiced out to 80 yards every week as well. All three shots were wide open and perfectly broadside. I practiced the long ranges primarily for Antelope but ended up getting the long shots at deer. Believe it or not, all three shots were clean pass throughs. I was shooting Easton X-7 2213's with 75 grain Rockets on two of them and an Easton ACC 3-39 with a 100 grain Muzzy on the other. Now, let me say that even though I still shoot year round and still shoot an occasional 3-D, I would not take a shot at any animal over 50 yards today. Everyone who bowhunts should establish their maximum effective range and stick with it. Avoid the temptation of flinging the long shot, hoping for a good result. Only shoot if you haveCONFIDENCE that you can make the shot.

RE: 40+ yards
Thank you Follower. They are all mine. Bow hunting is my passion. Go to the Taxidermy section, "Your best mounts" thread, page 9 & 10. Therearemore pics of my basement.

RE: 40+ yards
I agree with Follower. Beautiful pictures. The antler chandelier hanging in front of the elk threw me for awhile. Congratulations on some great animals!! I would like to ask a question. How do you get your pictures to post here. When I try to post a picture out of my digital camera, the pictures are always too large (too big - like 1mg).

RE: 40+ yards
Thank you. Trust me, it took me a while to figure it out.I had to resize them first so they would fit. I resized them on FastStone Image Viewer. It was in with my camera.

RE: 40+ yards
Thanks for the info. I will dig out my camera box this weekend up at my cabin and see if it is similar. I have a cabin in the mountains of Arizona and have 8 mounts in the main room but haven't been able to post any pictures as stated before. Thanks again.

RE: 40+ yards
I botched a 20 Yard gimmie last fall, and ended up having to make a 55 Yarder to finish it (Shooting Thunderhead 100)... With that said, I shoot everyday out to 60, and many days out to 70, and 80.
