RE: Bow what would you buy ?

I love my SBXT. I would choose that over any bow on the market right now.

I went from a 1994/1995 PSE NOVA to a 2006 Mathews Switchback XT. The improvements are too many to name. But going from my 2006 Mathews SBXT to a 2007 model from any of the big three manufacturers....I have shot them and have seen no improvements over my bow. (disclaimer....these are my opinions and I speak for myself only)

im looking at getting a new bow too,and having shot them all.which i highly recommend.its between the drenalin or the guardian im leaning towards the guardian but dont think you can go wrong with any newer bow.i personally didnt like the feel of the hoyt either the vectrix or the trykon, but that is just personal opinion.but i definitely recommend shooting them before you buy one.one or the other might feel way better and then you wont have any choice to make.

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

That's an almost flip a coin question . There are so many great bow's on the market that it make's it real tough to choose .
Even though I may love one certain brand ,it doesn't mean that that brand may siut you as it does me . So you really do need to go out and shoot as many as you can and then choose your bow that way .
Like lot's of these reply's really like the Switchback ,but you just don't go and buy it because these guy's love them ,you may or may not be disappointed . Shoot them all and go from what feel's right for YOU.

Your price range would dictate what type of suggestions you receive. If you are looking for top of the line then a bow like the previously mentioned Guardian, Vectrix, etc.. would be excellent in that regard. Mid priced offerings from companies like Diamond, Reflex and Bear would also be worthy of consideration.

HuntingEd 03-13-2007 08:56 AM

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

Hoyt Vetrix, QAD Ultrarest LD, Toxonics 5-pin sight, Fuse quiver.

Probably will be gettin one this summer:D

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

Tough question....

I would definetely try some Matthews and some of the top of the line PSE's. Those are my favorite bow brands basically.I would get whichever suited me best.I like PSE's arrows, Blackhawks, and Eastons. I like the Whisker Biscuit rest, Tru Clo sights, and Tru Fire releases. That's basically whatI would lean towards in my purchase but it's up to the indidvidual.

I am not loyal to any bow company, but after shooting most of the new bows, I chose the Guardian.

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

Bow: Mathews Drenalin or Diamond Black Ice. Black Ice is top of the line and cheaper then other top of the line bows.

Sight: Either Extreme 900 or Cobra Sidewinder

Rest: For hunting Wisker Biscuit.

Quiver: I own a Diamond bow so I just bought the Diamond quiver but they are all the same.

Shoot a bunch of bows and then decide. Beleive me on saying that you may think you want oneparticular bow for some reason and you try another one and say, "Dang this is the bow for me." For me it is the one in my sig.

Plus, you have to create some sort of criteria to start with or you iwll drive yourself nuts.

PaBowhntr stated it perfectly. I started in the $500 or lower price range and as I shot other bows that max number kept climbing until finally it wasn't an issue.

However, I don't think you could go wrong buying just about any bow out there. Get the bow you like best. Not the one that peir pressure tells you to buy and you'll love the bow that much better.

I have a Parker now, and I would buy another one. There are a lot of good bows out there.

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

I like my setup (see below), but of course I just bought it so I am kinda partial. I shot Matthews XT and Drenalin and Bowtech Guardian, Tribute and Allegiance (no Hoyt dealer) and went with the one that felt best to me and suited my short draw length.

The Vital Gear Triangle Sight is outstanding. Super Bright pins (0.29 top, and 0.19 bottom 2), and the way the pins are angled away is really nice.

My quiver is Alpine Soft-Loc. It is sturdy, quiet, and well made, but on the heavy side.

I looked at a bunch also But didn't want to go broke so I went with a Bear Instinct with extreme rt sights and a bodoodle rest. I was mid priced and was very comfortable. The new Martin Bengal is priced about the same.

Roskoe 04-26-2007 08:08 AM

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

I agree. These two bows are both excellent performers. Kinda like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry of the bow world. The $800 bows are a little smoother and slightly more refined, but they aren't going to bring home any more game than the Fred Bear or the Martin Bengal.

davepjr71 04-26-2007 08:46 AM

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

Very true Roskoe. I've owned Bear Bows since I was 19 yrs old and have shot deer with them. This year I just decided to get something different.

The most important aspect ofbowhunting is the guy behind the bow. Not the bow that's in your hand.

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

If I had to purchase a new bow it would be a Mathews Switchback XT or Drenlin, probably the Drenlin now. I prefer a short/light bow with forgiveness.

Sight- Only a HHA Optimizer single pin sight. They are great!

Arrows- Gold Tips with 2 inch Blazer vanes

Rest- I'm a hunter, so a Whisker Biscut would be my # choice still.

Release- Scott Archery

Stabilizer- the smallest S-Coil Simms makes.

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

As for myself,I preffered the Bowtech Guardian over the Switchback XT.

Nothing wrong with the Switchback. Or the Darton's that i tried or the Ross. But for me the Guardian felt better.

Something that doesn't have a single cam and it's inherent cam lean. Something that doesn't have a cable guard to twist the limbs, causing cam lean. Something smooth and fast.

I guess that means a Martin with NitrousX cams. But then I already have three of them.

If i could choose one i actually think i would give the High Country Iron Mace a go! I have looked at it and sure does look like a sweet bow.

I posted a similar post a few weeks back: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2064026&mpage=1&key=&#206402 6

I shot everyone of those bows listed and put at least a dozen arrows through them. That is what you should do is just shoot a bunch of them and pick what feels good for you in the shop and imagine yourself in that treestand, sitting for 3 hrs 15 degrees! The one bow that I did not list that I ended shooting was the Elite Synergy. In the end it came down to the Synergy and Cardiac. They arefast, quiet, minimal shock and priced right compared to their direct competitors! I shot these bows for 2 hrs in the shop, through a chrono, different arrows even different rests. In the end I chose the Cardiac due to the smoother draw for those cold mornings!

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

LOTS of good bows. I still shoot the old Mathews Legacy. The newer mathews bows are betterbows overall, but I can flat shoot this bow.

But, if I was going to buy a brand new one it would be theSBXT. The Drenalin is probably OK but too new. Let them get the bugs out.

Narrow it down by shooting them. A big dealfor me, and I will put it right back on the hook, is if it has "jump" when you shoot it. Wants to jump forward on release. There are too many good bows, put that one back.

Look for none to very low Jump, none to very low Shock, and Quiet. Then look at speed if that is a concern. Don't be afraid to ask to shoot bows at a Pro Shop.

Some guys have forgotten more than I know butover the last 25 years I haveowned and hunted with,in this order. Bear recurve, Bear Whitetail compound, Browning Midas, Martin Cougar, Martin something (lynx maybe),Hoyt freaky loudcam something, Darton lightning, Darton viper, back to Martin Cougar,High Country Extreme, and then, the Mathews Legacy in '03.Have not had areason to change since then. Maybe this year to a SBXT.

Whatever it is worth.

Oops, forgot accessories. Mathews SBXT Factory bow Factory strings. String Leachs added, Simms S Coil Stabilizer, shooting loop, Cobra Sidewinder sight (5 Pin), and for hunting probably a Whisker Biscuit rest.Detachable Mathews quiver.
Tack drivin' son of a gun!

Browning Rage One or PSE Fire Storm with Whisker Biscuit rest and Tru Glo 4 or 5 pin sight and the 8 arrow PSE quiver.

RE: Bow what would you buy ?

I bought the Mathews Drenalin and I wasn't too thrilled with it. When I first shot it at my local archery shop I loved it. But, after shooting it for a while I realized the weight of this bow is not for someone who shoots 3D and also hunts. The bow is so light it just floats. I want to use the same set up for both 3D and hunting so I don't want to add a huge stabilizer or adda bunch of extras to go wrong when I'm in the field. So, I got rid of it.

I went back to the Archery shop to repeat the whole testing process again and shot every bow in the place twice. They never had the Hoyt Vulcan in so I traveled 3 hours away to test it out, and that was the best trip I've ever made. I couldn't believe the speed and how quiet this thing was. I was a little worried about the brace height, but I'm telling you this thing is one of the most forgiving bows I've ever shot. It is also the smoothest Hoyt I have ever drawn. I have never been a Hoyt fan, but after shooting the Vulcan...I was sold. If you haven't shot one, run to your local archery shop and you better bring your check book.

By the way, the first 3D shoot I took the Vulcan to I shot a 286. The best I shot with the Drenalin was a 268.
