The first place to start is a local Pro Shop. They may want to sell some goodies but they want your business so they'll treat you right, And they will fit you to a bow that suits you.

russelld, alot will depend on your intentions. Hunting? Target? 3D? There are many bows that will fill your specific needs. Some will do a good job, in any type shooting you choose. I'd suggest a bow with a brace height of at least 7". I don't personally feel short bows are all that much more trouble to shoot, as long as the brace is high enough. If hunting is your main goal, ask for a bow that is quiet and draws easily. Don't get carried away with a high draw weight. Too much weight will make it hard to draw with warm clothes on, and when you're cold. Remember, in the shop it may not feel too bad to pull 70 or more #. But when you practice, the exra weight will wear on you. This is just my opinion, of course, but there are many bows that shoot plenty fast at 60#. I feel that being able to hold your bow in front of you and draw straight back, less movement, is very helpful when hunting. Alot will be determined by you budget. The most important thing is to get a bow that fits and suits you. Shoot as many different bows as you can. Pick the one you felt shot the best for you.
