Kids bow revisited-WHY

Okay, there were some good suggestions on the thread about kids bows the other day, people saying this one or that one. I have gone and looked on the web at most of the ones mentioned, saw some things I liked, and some I didn't. What I want to know is WHY you listed the bow you did? What qualities made you pick it over the others? Mainly I am looking for something that will go up to our states minumum 40# draw for hunting, but can be adjusted low enough (?) for my 10 yr old to learn on.

So let me have it guys! Open to any and all suggestions! You can even pitch your stickbow Arthur.:D

Well you are in the same boat I was in... However, I needed one for my wife. Small woman and a lefty at that. I went on ebay and found a PSE Spyder. The whole package cost me $160. And It has a very liberal draw length and weight! A great starter bow!

There are lots of bows out there but I am only familiar with two at the moment that I think would work. One is the Alpine Micro and the other is the Browning Micro Midas 3.

Alpine: 21-28" draw, 10 lb weight adjustment, machined alum riser, decent quality. The ones I've checked have a tendency to be a little light on the peak weight. Most 40 pounders only make 35#.

Browning: 18-28" draw, 10 lb weight adjustment, decent starter bow.

Here's a little trick for making a kid's bow last a couple years longer, and it can be done with any bow. Short string it an inch and change the drawlength module enough to fit him. This reduces the drawlength by that much and also drops the weight range by about 7-10 lbs. By the time the string needs replaced, maybe a year later, the child has grown enough that you can put the original string back on, adjust the weight and drawlength again and he's shooting again. Hopefully by this time he's also developed his shooting muscles and can handle a little more weight.

And do some shopping. You want a bow that has a lot of drawlength adjustment. Not an inch or two. You never know when the boy will grow like a weed in six months.

If your kid is new to archery I would honestly go with 2 bows, trying to get a new shooter a bow in the 30 to 40 pound range is a tall order for most kids. I oncehad the chance to talk toTed Nugent, He has been teaching kids how to shoot bows for years. He gave me some advise for my little girl (she's 8 now and was 6 at the time). He said, 1) Never make a kiddraw too much weight. He said a heavy pull will tire them quickly and really kill their form, not to mention take fun the out of it.
2) Use arrows with feathers, feathers are more forgiving and most kids bows use flipper rest.
3) let them shot some thing big and soft so the arrows will stick every time like a bail of hay , a kid will become a little freaked out if his arrow bounces off a target espically at close range.
Those were the main 3 tips he gave me.He also suggested no sights at first, finger shoot, and have them start super close and shoot at a big target.

The bow I picked up for my girl was a Mathews Genessis, The draw length is not an issue and she can grow with it. The draw weight also goes down to 10 lbs. She shoots 15 now and won't be ready for 40 for a coupple years at least. (Ohio also has a 40 pound min) .

When she's ready I pick her up a good hunting bow, Bow tech makes some good kid bows that are the fastest kid bows out, but she's a coupple yearsout still and somethig better may be out then , untill then we'll just practice with her Genessis. Jim

Well I didn't see the other thread but I will post my opinion here for you.

IMHO the Browning micro bows offer much more bow for a youngster than any other bow available. The micro midas and adrenaline are dual cam bows with very large cams for a smooth draw, are draw length adjustable from 18 - 28 inches with out a press, boasts higher speeds than just about any other youth bow available (added penetration in animals), has a great slim grip for small hands, have a very respectable brace height for a youth bow at 6.5 inches.

All in all they offer a very good value for an archer just starting out and still growing.

I bought my daughter a micro midas and my wife a micro adrenaline. I have been very opleased with the performance with both of them.

take a look at the pse bandit. i think it goes up to 35lbs. my little brother had one but when it was time he got a bigger bow anyway. that bow was neat though. small and light weight. i almost wanted to use it:D

These are great suggestions guys, and I really appreciate the input. I hear what you are saying on not making them draw too much weight, I had been concerned about that also. However, he is growing so fast right now, his physical and mental strength does not even compare to a year ago. He works on the farm for his uncle in the summer, and is halfback on his football team. He is also a very determined child and wants to hunt with a bow so bad he can't stand it. Shot his first doe with a rifle last year, has his buck already picked out this year (we'll see!).

Keep 'em coming, I'm one of those guys you can't give too much information!
