Drop Away Rests
Question : I currently have a wisker biscuit , and boy will it tear some vanes up. Are the drop aways that much better as far as arrow flight since no contact is made , or is the difference to small to notice ?

RE: Drop Away Rests
Good question. You are definitely going to notice less vane wear with a drop away style rest (assuming it is properly set up). :) Accuracy should be roughly equivalent with both rests with maybe a slight edge to the drop away since there is less of a chance of torque impacting accuracy.

RE: Drop Away Rests
I put a whisker biscuit on my bow this Spring and shot it up until this week. Like you, I found that it was hard on feathers and vanes. And I wasn't satisfied with the accuracy, range and noise compared to my previous rest.
I had a diamondback dropaway put on this past Monday. The difference in accuracy and overall quietness was evident in the first few shots. After shooting these past few evenings, I am convinced I made the right change. I will definitely put a dropaway on my other bow. |
RE: Drop Away Rests
I put a Whisker Biscuit on my new Switchback and took it back after a day of shooting. It was way to loud for my liking. Why settle for all the friction when you can do without? The best thing about the Biscuit is it secures the arrow so you don't have to worry about it falling off of the rest. There are drop aways that have the same feature. I bought an Ultra-Rest and I love it. There are others great drop aways, but give this one a look. gl

RE: Drop Away Rests
Definitely take a look at the QAD Ultra Rest or the Ripcord (which is a copy of the Ultra design). You can cock the fork in the up position when you nock your arrow, which provides complete containment no matter what you do. Plus you don't have to worry about the arrow popping off the forks when you draw back - since the rest is already in the up position. Since I can't keep from tinkering, I've looked at a lot of different rests and have yet to find anything that provided the features of the QAD. Now, if you don't care about containment and only want the fastest possible drop away out there, there are others to choose from. But I'd rather have the containment feature over speed, especially since I've never had a problem with vanes contacting the forks anyway.

RE: Drop Away Rests
Hi there. One I don't like the WB. Put the main problem with them is that when you shoot helical fletching through them they teasar them up. Try shooting straight fletching, or go spend the money on a good drop rest. I shoot the Trophy Ridge Drop Zone.

RE: Drop Away Rests
Just hard to beat a quality fallaway rest for flawless performnace! I also depend on the Trophy Ridge Drop Zone and these incredoble rest have never let me down on any of my huntin' rigs for 3 seasons now! You've got to check one out?

RE: Drop Away Rests
I think the drop away gives you a little more forgiveness, and if working properly, no fletch contact. As far as accuracy goes, maybe a little edge over a properly set up Biscuit. I have my #1 bow set up with a QAD, and the backup had the Biscuit. Arrow flight, accuracy, and broadhead flight seem pretty much the same with both. My QAD started hanging up, and I took the rest apart 3 times, finally taking out the little catch that kept it in the upright position. Now it functions like a Trophy Taker, but it does give me clearance every time, which it didn't do before. I still like the rest, and the way my bow shoots.
BUT, if you are tearing up vanes with the Whisker Biscuit, then either you are not using the right vanes (Flex Fletch, Vanetec, Blazers, or feathers), or there is a problem with the setup, and you are getting strong contact with the support bar at the bottom, or some othe tuning issue. With at least 3 bows, I have gotten the Biscuit to shoot pretty well, at least good enough to shoot 2-3" groups at 30 yds. Full helical with good vanes is not a problem. They should show almost no wear when you use good vanes and the bow is well tuned. |
RE: Drop Away Rests
Hmmm....well, a drop will most certainly not ruin your fletching. I doubt they are more accurate though. Those WB's are darn good rests. I believe a drop will help with broadhead flight. No contact is always a good thing. You will also gain a little speed with a drop, somewhere around 3-5 fps.
The one thing I really like about a WB is it's simplicity. Very simple rest, no moving parts, not much to go wrong. |
RE: Drop Away Rests
I like the WB that I have, its accurate and still pretty quiet. Yes it wrinkes the vanes but then I just take a hairdryer to em to straighten them out again.

RE: Drop Away Rests
I Use the "Vital Bow Gear" Ultimate Fall Away rest on my bow. This system gives you the same benifits of the Wisker Bicuit by clamping the arrow down before draw (so no arrows falling off your rest while walking thru the woods) with the fall away rest you have the added benifit of nothing touching the arrow when released...Check out their site at Vitalbowgear.com... RE: Drop Away Rests
I use a golden preimer rest and don't have any trouble with vane clearance.I am a hunter that hunts everyday day of the season and walks throught the woods the first think to keep in mind is that nice string that hangson that rest it going to catch branches all the time.and yank on the rest and the inertria activated rest when you draw your bow back and let it down it uncocks thats real handy boy I hope the biggest buck in the woods isn't under your stand when you have to reach to recock the rest & if you lightly tap your bow turning in your stand its going to drop also.thats why i use a simple rest with good vane clerance no problems.

RE: Drop Away Rests

RE: Drop Away Rests
I had a WB on my bow andI changed it just for the simple fact that it was doing a number on the vains.I put a NAP Quicktune 2000 RG on it & it was the best thing I could have done for my bow & myself as far as shooting the bow goes too...I think the drop away only cost about 65 bucks & it tuned in a breeze puting bullet holes through paper.

RE: Drop Away Rests
I use a Trapdoor fallaway,it realy helped my groups and made the bow easier to tune. I wouldn't go to the stand without one.

RE: Drop Away Rests
Myself, as a spot shooter, i just cant see where the wb, would not hender the flight of the arrow. For one, theres no way that it doesnt affect speed. #2 any contact with the fletchings after the arrow has left the string, just simply cannot be a good thing. Now, i have never shot one but theyre are alot of people who do. That only leads me to beleive that there are alot of people out there who are not shooting to their potential. Why would anybody pay $700 for a bow and turn right around and pay $40 - $50 for something that is going to keep that bow from doin what you paid for it to do. In my opinion you may as well take that money pit and use it for a walkin stick. I visited an out of town bow shop last week and watched a guy buy a switchbak for 669. Had the tec put a wb on it. I asked the tec if it hurt the flight of the arrow, and all he said was "Hey thats what he wants me to put on it, so thats what hes gettin". Talk about sidesteppin'. I do stress the fact that i have never shot a wb, but if i wanted to, instead of buying one i believe id just shoot through a brush pile. Just some plain ol wes by god virginia logic.

RE: Drop Away Rests
I would give the TKO dropaway a try my buddy hounded me to buy one I finally did last year and I was a great choice.

RE: Drop Away Rests
Well I've used several dropaways over the last few years and they do shoot well, but I switched to a Whisker Biscuit Deluxe this year. I did start using the Blazer vanes. I can truely say that the love the WB. With the Blazer vanesit doesn't tear them up at all. I've been shooting at 40 yds with this set up and just ruined a couple of arrows the other day because they are hitting the same hole. I only lost 2 FPS with this rest. I am using the Magnus stingers and they fly exactly the same as the fieldpoints out of the WB. I think the biggest thing I like is the fact that this rest is so simple and fool proof. I just dont like my arrow being lifted up and down for hunting or worrying about the arrow falling off the rest before the shot. And keep in mind I was one who said that I would never put one of those stupid things on one of my bows and know I won't take it off. To each his own I guess

RE: Drop Away Rests
The MZE has worked well for me , and you would need to be almost upside down to get the arrow off of the rest

RE: Drop Away Rests
i was thinking of purchasing a trophy taker shakey hunter, and was wondering if any of you have any experience with it? also, do you use the long mount, or short mount. thanks in advance.
