Broadheads for black bear?
OK boys, time to start thinking seriously about which broadheads to use first for an upcoming black bear hunt ( Sept ) over bait and then some deer hunting this fall. I'm leaning on these 2. Montec G5 and Slick trick 4 blade ( both 100gr). Have read many positives on the slick tricks which is tempting and I was also thinking of trying a 4 blade for the bear. I will be shooting a 378 gr arrow ( GT XT 5575) from a Patriot set at 62lbs. Shots will be within 30 yds max. So, what do you all think, 3 or 4 blade?
Also, I'm taking Nubo out on his first bear hunt so I need something to finish off his bear quick so he can climb down of his tree before breakfast ![]() |
RE: Broadheads for black bear?
Terry, I currently shoot slick tricks (100) I can't say enough good things about them. They are very accurate. As for the 3 and 4 blade question, I would go with 4. That one extra blade can mean alot more blood loss. I don't think you can go wrong with either my choice would be the slick tricks. The slick tricks also come packaged alot sharper that the montecs. Hope this helps, just my personal opinion though.

I'm also thinking that 4th blade can do more damage and produce a quicker kill on the big black buggers with thick blood soaking hair! I am leaning more to the slick tricks at this point.

wow terry, i have been thinking the excact same, i shoot 63lb, and gt 55/75 and broadheads this year ? montec or slick tricks... i just talk to a guy on archery talk who has used both his choice was the slick tricks... he like the flight on both but the slick tricks had bigger hole!;) i am really leaning towards the slick tricks, also becuase of replacable blades!:)
tis sept. will hopefully be my first bear kill and i will be using a bow! |
RE: Broadheads for black bear?
I've shot both and the slick trick wins hands down.
I currently use the 125's and as far as I am concerned nothing comes close to matching the performance of the slick trick when you consider all aspects of individual broadheads. While montecs are certainly good quality heads they have some draw backs that I do not like. My biggest grype is the one piece construction. While this is great for strength if you dmage one you may as well toss it. While practicing with montecs for groups I managed to have a couple of heads impact each other inside the target. After that they blades had huge gouges in them and they were instantly useless for hunting. At $10 each that could get expensive. Same would go for hitting rocks after a pass thru. I much prefer the replaceable baldes of the slick trick, or any head for that matter. If a blade gets damaged just replace it for about a buck. I also prefer the 1 1/8" four blade cut of the slick trick to the three blade 1 1/16 inch cut of the montec. Much bigger hole and far more tissue being cut inside the animal. Slick tricks are by far the most accurate broadhead I have shot. |

Don't worry john,
I won't let the big bad bear chew on your Dually and get it all scratched up. He'd spit you out quick too:D |
RE: Broadheads for black bear?
I'm afraid he won't get the chance to do that ,you know how much I love my Dually .I'll be a bigger and badder bear if he get's too close LOL

Give the Magnus Stingers a look. I dont think you'll be disappointed. If you ruin a broadhead out in the field, just send it in, and they will send you another free.

RE: Broadheads for black bear?
I have taken 4 bear with my Slick Trick 125's. They have all been complete pass throughs and the farthest a bear went after the shot was 45 yards. I shot Muzzy's for many years before switching to Tricks. I have been very impressed with the Slick Tricks, and wished I would have switched sooner. Great penetration, and unbelievable flight. I also like the 4th blade for extra tissue damage. I am getting 61 lbs of KE with my set-up, and have blown through everything I have shot with the Tricks.
