i really wanna try bowfishing some day, and i got this old bow of mine the poundage aint real high only like 30 or 40, if i were to set that thing up u think taht would work good, or should i get somethin else or use my bow huntin bow(which is about 55#) to someday try this out cuz this sounds like lots of fun

At the tournament I just came back from, the guys that brought in 160 fish were using 30lb bows. The lighter poundage kept the arrows from jamming into the roots and mud so they could retrieve fish and arrows faster.

I was using only a 45lb bow and sometimes I had to really fight to get my arrow back from the bottom of the lake. One time it took me 15 minutes to get my arrow back. (I'm using a 23.00 Muzzy Carbon arrow... so I really didn't want to leave it)

Your old bow sounds like an ideal weight for bowfishing. 55lbs is really overkill.

Just about any bow can work for bowfishing. My favorite is an Oneida Osprey that I only use for bowfishing.

i dont know if it was just me, but on the video's it looked like the arrows rose once they hit the water, is this true? do the arrows rise once they hit the water

An arrow will sometimes 'plane' when it hits the water... but what you are seeing is refraction in action. (hey, that rhymes!)

The arrow isn't rising, but it looks as if it is because of the way water bends light. This is the same reason you need to aim low. Refraction makes the fish look like it's higher up in the water than it really is. :)

The bow I prefer for carp here in Mi. is just an ole recurve, light in poundage say, 40-45#.
They don't wear you out carrying them because they are light, they shoot quick and being they are in and out of the water all the time, they are cheap to replace!
Another reason for the light draw weight is so you don't blow through the fish as easy. Nothing worse then when your shooting in a tournament, trying to shoot-retrieve-string alot of fish and your arrow passes completely through and gets tangled up with your retriever line![:@]
