Ok My fellow Minnesota bowfishers
 

I will be trying this deal for the first time this year. Out of my three bows I will be using my oldest compound made by Darton. Whats the best rig as far as the reel to use? The 50 dollar get up you can buy everywhere. Here is the link of the one at Cabelas not sure if it's the exact same as the one the archery shops and Fleet farm have. Any suggestions?

well now that retriever will work but there are cheaper places to buy it... that have a lot better selection of equipment then Cabelas... here's one...

The AMS Retreiver reel is a great reel. I live in central MN and there's alot of great/fabulous shooting across the state. We're even going to have a statewide club start this year, hope we'll see you at a shoot. My advice for a begginer, get your set-up ready early and practice with it. Getting those big heavy arrows ( most are from 1450 to 2000 grains) to fly true can be a challenge. Its very important to get them to fly staight or the arrows dart off left, right, up or down once they pentrate the water. Also go practice shooting off a dock or in a boat at a target in the water. Put your targets at differant distances and differant depths. If you don't do this your first few trips could be pretty dissappointing.......its amazing how low you have to aim!

So you're going to try bowfishing........I hope your ready........its extremely addicting!

Cloud, I am close to you, and have been to Mikes before. I just wanted to get an idea of a good set up for a decent price. I heard those retrievers or that style anyway work the best. But have not yet talked to any Archery shop reguarding it yet. Thanks for your info guys.

Here's what I'd set-up with for our area:

Compound - 55 to 65 lb.
Rest - Bowfishing Whisker Biskit - cut (for top load) mounted in front of riser
Reel - AMS Retreiver Reel - standard
Kisser button - 45 degree angle kisser
Sights - nothing fancy - single pin
Arrow - Mike's Archery custom bowfishing arrow
Glasses - first pair amber - grey back-ups

Thats just the basics.

Where is Mike's located in St Cloud? I went to school at SCSU but I don't recall a Mike's Archery at all. Also, do you tie on to your arrows at the front or back of the arrow? I used to have an arrow that tied to the front and I liked it because I didn't have to worry about the line getting caught on my arm or the bow. Now it seems like most of the arrows I see for sale have holes in the back to tie on.

Mike's is just north of HWY 10 on HWY 23 just before the Honda House (honda car dealer ship).

I would strongly suggest NOT tieing to the rear of your arrow. When you buy a AMS Retreiver Reel you get a AMS slide kit. They really work quite well.
