Help me start my son!
 

I used to bowfish when I was a teenager but, I haven't since then. I recently bought some ground that borders the Missouri River. Our creek has been backed up for some time now because of the high river level. My son saw a large gar in the creek and was excited about it. I told him some stories about when I used to bowfish and he has gone nuts about the idea. His birthday is next week and he has asked for a bowfishing rig. He is going to be 10 years old and weighs about 75-80lbs. He has a PSE spider compound that shoots up to 30lbs. I used to use a junk shoot-through-the-spool rig and I don't know anything about the new equipment. What would you recommend for a set up? Will his bow be alright? Should I modify his arrows and how? Any advice is appreciated.

If he can pull the 30# that should be plenty.
(1) Spend the money for a retriever reel from AMS.
(2) Make sure the arrows you get him have safety slides.
If you need to, you can cut the arrowsdown for his draw length. But that usually isn't needed.
(3) Make sure the rest will support the heavy fiberglass arrows.
(4) Have fun!

my brother shoots from a pse spider and he has no problem with it at all last week we went out and shot about a 25pound commen carp so it sould be alright=all you need is a reel which can be a zebco 808 or something similar and an arrow that should about do you good luck

yeoldearcheryshoppe.com sells all the AMS reels and stuff, as well as other brands, but much cheaper. check them out.

where along the Missouri are you? There might be a store nearby that can set you up. Since he's ten, the retriever might be the best option - simple to use and will last forever.

I would go with the 808 bowfisher. About 1/2 the price of the retreiver and seems very smooth. I would make sure that you add the rod to the end of the base so he cant draw the bow without the button pushed. (one of the drawbacks to a spinner for a beginer) Make sure you have safety slides on the arrows. Most of all...BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!!
