Spearguns
 

I know this is a bowfishing forum but spearfishing is quite similar. A buddy and I are going to try spearfishing for carp this spring, we don't want to throw a ton of money into it until we experience it first. Wondering if anyone could recomend a decent speargun for lets say around $200.

So your going to be swimming in a lake and shooting carp with a speargun?
Sounds fun.

JBL makes a few good guns, aluminum, very rugged, carbine is a good gun around 100.00, double bands for added power..You can go on ebay and look, I sell about 10 spearguns a year on there, you can also get gas operated ones, more expensive..I would try a JBL, I spearfish alot and have several and they have been real good guns..Good Luck!!!

JBL does make a good gun for the price. I had a JBL 38 Carbine. It worked well, but I didn't like the balance. It wore my hand out. I prefer a 24-36in gun (depending on viz) with the handle about 6-10 inches up from the butt of the gun. You can probably find a decent one on ebay.

Are you gona free dive or scuba?

Thanks for the imput. Bigcounrty,we're going to try free diving in a bay off of Lake Michigan. I tooka lookat the JBL guns, look like very decent guns for the money, that's probably the way I'll go. Is there anything you want to stay away from? I'll keep an eyeout on ebay. Now does anyone have any good tips from your spearfishing experiences that you'd lie to share so a rookie like myself doesn't kill himself!!

If you're free diving 1) get a spare air and find a way to strap it to you. 2) take two dive knifes one on your leg the other somehwhere above your waist. Your primary danger is going to be monofilment in the water. You may not see it until it has you tangnled and if your stuck in a position where you can't reach your leg knife you'll want to have the other one handy.Of course always take a buddy and it would be good to have someone there with Scuba in the boat in casesomeone gets in trouble.

I'm pretty new myself and I scuba where I can find clean water here around OK. I've gotten tangled up a couple of times but I was using Scuba so I had time to get out.

If you're looking at shooting large fish you may want to consider getting a gun with a reel mount so you don't have to make the choice between air and speargun.

If you google spearfishing you will find alot of good forums on the subject. Most will be around saltwater hunting, but many of the principles still apply.
