this is the first dog fish that we've ever shot, but i have caught quite a few and have never seen a green one like this. anyone know what the deal is?

I shot one just like that a couple weeks ago at Rend Lake. Pretty cool looking.

It's a " Spring is in the air " thing that the males do.
It's kinda like flaunting a hot car or a puffy wallet.
Green fins = chick magnet.

I love the way they look. Just missed one last year myself.
Pretty uncommon up here, or at least hard to spot.
If you catch a male on its nest, you may get more than one shot since they are so protective.

I agree with Bulzeye that has to do with mating rituals. I live in florida and its not uncommon to shoot 5-10 per night, so I'd say they very common around here. But we call them mudfish.

Nice fish. I've heard that scientist have found dog fish fossils in the jurrasic period. That's one bad ____ fish either that or its a good design. Probably a little of both. I've caught one on a hook and line, while wading, the thing shook the hook and than it sat there looking at me. I think I took a step back...
