My first Gator Season is over...

but i had a blast!!!

tonight was a lil different...we were using a jonboat instead of the airboat and it was just my nephew and me...same method: harpoon, cut spine, and scramble brains....at first it was kinda slow cause all the gators were in this really thick hydrilla which only the airboat can go through so we were huntin' open waters and edges....the gators were really spooked compared to the other night so as soon as you'd get close they'd go under...a couple hours went by and i blew one shot on about a 8 or 9 footer....the jiggy thing didn't stick  ...then a few minutes later we see a decent one and i go for it again....this time making a great hit  .....next thing you know i've got rope zingin' out of my hands...now i know the true meaning of "rope burn"...lol. ....we recovered the harpoon stick and started after my gator.....when we got to him he was not a happy lil camper....he was fightin' way more than my first one...at one point he even bit the side of the boat :o ...that was frickin' cool as anything but waaaay scarey at the same time  ....got him tired out and pulled him up on the side of the boat...i did the final deeds and then said my thank you's....on the way back in we ran into some buddies of my nephew's, they were bringin' in a 7.5ft. gator...it was a family (very cool)...the lil boy asked my nephew to help kill it so we tied up to their boat and he showed the lil guy how to do it like "he does it"....it was really cool seein' kids get into huntin' like that. ....as we were all sittin' there lettin' their gator bleed out (so it didn't ruin their beautiful pontoon boat...lol)....we had some other guys pull up to check on everyone, just seein' if we were all ok...then they were all talkin' about how there were some idiots over there tryin' to harpoon a gator :o ....i couldn't help myself but i interrupted and told them that was how i got the 8ft. gator next to me.....it was a classic moment...i know huntnma will appreciate it...lol.
so now my first gator season is complete....i didn't think i'd ever hunt gators, never thought it was in me but i really enjoyed the whole experience...i don't know if i'm gonna apply anymore because it's so costly but it's something i'll always remember...next year huntnma can apply and i'll video her hunt.
pics will have to wait until i call huntnma

Congrats. From my limited past experiences, the 6-7' range gators are very scrappy not to mention strong. Like all muscle! Good job. Glad all went well for you.

I thought you were talking about gator gar. Thats cool tho. Just didnt like the part were you let it bleed to death.

RE: My first Gator Season is over...

didn't mean to offend you so let me rephrase:
the gators were already dead when they were put into the boats...the family we were helpingon our wayback indidn't want blood getting into their boat so they hung it over the side in order for the blood to drain...but be assurred they did not bleed to death...that would be way too slow which would have been cruel.

A.D.D., do you know these creatures are Cold blooded and notWarm blooded?
Some families have lost children, pets and livestock over these creatures you
consider pets. They will tare you to pieces if they get ahold of you. I would do
anything I had to do to kill them, especially when you are hunting them and have
them that close to the boat. There is no second chance with these creatures.

A.D.D., I see you did'nt do good in science. I don't know how old you are
and what state you live in, but you are talking to an old man that has taken
more gators than you are ever going to see . You truly don't know any thing
about reptiles, do you?

RE: My first Gator Season is over...

harpoon or bang stick, you should always cut their spine and scramble their brains just to be on the safe side, i didnt like the fact that it wasn't like conventional hunting, (bang and youre dead)......the gator died alot faster than some bow kills.....so if you A.D.D. dont like the bleeding to death part, then i would never bow hunt if i were you....;)

How do you think most all animals shot with a bow die? They bleed to death, that's how!

Congrats on the cool gators!

From the way he talks he doesn't know much about nothing. If you don't like animals to bleed to death then maybe you should give up deer hunting.

In ADD's defense, I re read the post and can understand where he's coming from. I pmed him and explained it and he seemed to understand and accept it.

On the other hand, I can see why y'all are reacting the way y'all are. Bleedin' to death is definitely a part of huntin' and if he bow hunts then he shouldn't get upset about it.

Either way, we shouldn't pick on him. We should help him understand.

nice kill! i helped a fish and game officer kill two gators a few years back on my lake here in florida,we finished him with the bangstick, those things are kool.

RE: My first Gator Season is over...

we were gonna use the bangstick but it was screwed up and wanted to be safe so i used a knife....it was super cool...still on cloud #9.:D

fl, if a person asks a question, I will whole heartedly give a reasonable answer,
but when they make a statement and call you out, they are going to get an answer
they deserve. No big deal, considering the situation. Thanks.

Alligator Hunting Permits - Florida's statewide alligator harvest program establishes Alligator Harvest Management Units with conservative harvest quotas to provide recreational opportunities for Floridians, and non-residents as well, to take up to 2 alligators.
