Does anyone know how to sharpen a gut hook on their hunting knife?????

I use my Drexel with a grinding stone. I have two different dremels. The best one is with variable speed.

I use a pocket sized sharpening steel I carry with me most always. It isn't any bigger than a pocket ink pen, it has maybe a 3/16 inch diameter. It also works wonders for a quick chain saw touch up.

I actually sharpen any blade seldom, maybe twice a year and in between I use the steel.

I use a permanent marker on the blade edge, which makes it very easy to see what kind of cut/angle you have. Most times the blade only needs a little touch up. All of my blades will shave the hair off of my arm and I keep them that way.

IMO the best way is to touch up the blade often with a steel and avoid cutting too much metal when you do have to use a stone. IMO people overdo the sharpening thing on most occasions.

Yeah a small steel or round file, diamond rod etc should work and I know its not what you ask but seriously if you like gut hooks just get a utility knife and use roofers blades.

Does it make a fine cut or a coarse cut? I've bought a few diamond sharpeners over the years, most have been too coarse for my taste. My pocket steel is just about worn out, twenty years old. Hard to find one that is just right.

You can specify the coarseness with the hone. The other thing is to find a thin ceramic stick, that will match the curve of your 'hook.

ive seen ones that have a set screw that when loosened a unility blade is removed and a new one is installed.
