When to temper

New to knife making. I have a couple of blanks and was verifying do I temper after the edge has been created?

Before you grind the edge. There is a TV show called Forged in fire on the history channel. You could learn a lot from it. It is on on Tuesdays where I live but it may be a different night where you live.

The tempering process is done after the heat treating; it needs to be done fairly soon after heat treating due to the internal stress of the steel. Before heat treating you should have your rough grind leaving about the thickness of a dime. After the tempering you can now clean up the blade and do a finish grind making sure you don't over heat the blade.
this is my website, feel free to email me with questions. I'm always ready to help new knife makers.

Tempering and heat treating are two different things; you heat treat after primary grind and holes are all drilled then it is heat treated....after heat treating the knife is too hard and brittle, then you temper the blade normally depending on what Rockwell hardness you are trying to achieve. Normally 400 degrees for two hours, take out of oven let cool and repeat process.... then he finish grind can be done, followed with the sanding to the desired finish you want... For my mirror finish I start with 125 grit and take to 5000 grit.
Samples can be seen on my gallery on my webpage..
