Best Survival/Multipurpose Knife
If you guys could only take one knife for a month long hunting/camping trip which knife would you take/buy?
|
For me, the only time I have ever only taken one knife is on the Appalachian Trail and it was a Gerber Multi Tool. In 20 years in the Marine Corps I always had a Swiss Army knife in my pocket but I had a heavy blade too.
When I go hunting I always have my Kershaw for skinning, a heavy blade and a fishing fillet knife for boning. |

Only one?? Yikes.... I could never bring just one... Lol, just couldn't do it...
I suppose if I "had" to choose only one... It'd be either my ESEE-5 with Hedgehog Leatherworks deluxe sheath.... Or my Dogwood Custom Knives Echo-5... It'd be really hard to choose one of those two. But in all honesty, I'm very into bushcraft & survival so I go quite gear heavy and always carry a knife for each individual task, as well as folding saw & hatchet.... so one just wouldn't be an option... It'd be both above, as well as a Bark River Necker 2, Survive Knives Necker, Gerber Suspension and Benchmade Rescue hook. Ya, I know... Quite a lot, but it works for me and I like it... Lol. And surprisingly it doesn't add much weight at all (though the ESEE alone is a solid pound, lol), nor take up much space... (The ESEE/HH, Bark River and Survive are in my profile pic. The ESEE 5 is one mean knife... Pretty hard to beat) |

Ha, I wouldn't limit myself to one knife
And the knives don't have to be long military blades. I wear one twenty year old Schrade on my hip; two different sizes of pocket knives in my pockets; one backup cheap small pocket knife in my day pack.
Gutting and skinning a deer, one really doesn't need a very big knife. |
Either My SOG Jungle Primitive or my Cold Steel SRK. Both are great blades
|
I like my Gerber LMF, its on the heavy side, but can stand to be abused.
|
for me it's a sharp knife
One of the best knives I have has a blade of carbon steel. Blade is only four inches long. It's game not war. Was shrapened up quickly. Cost less than ten dollars. Wasn't made for gutting or working on a deer. Has a wooden handle.
Most hunters/survivalist wouldn't think of using it. A knife sharpener would. And for me, that has made all the difference. |
I've wanted one of those gerber LMFs for a while

I HAVE A BUCK 639. HEAVY BLADE , so it will take some punishment. serated on one side . can cut wire ,chop wood if neccesary. sorry no pics
