question

Today after school I'm going to go to my new make shift range and do some testing to find the optimal charge for my gun/bullet. I'm giong to be doing it at 60 yards or so. My question is, will the charge i get the tightest group with at 60 yards also be the charge i get he tightest group with at 100 yards?

RE: question

I've seen rifles shoot an excellent group at 60 yards but then open up a lot, at further distances. Some bullets will hold an excellent group together and then for no reason suddenly the group opens up to unacceptable standards. All you can do is try the different projectiles.

Normally if the rifle is shooting a great group at 25 yards it will shoot groups in direct correlation to that first group as you move back. For instance at 50 yards if it is shooting a 2" group, you can then figure that if you went to 100 yards it would shoot a 4" group or better if the projectile holds true.

RE: question

Unfortunately, you can not assume good groups at 50 (or 60) yards translates to good groups at 100 yards. I have a T/C Encore 209x50 that would group most bullets OK at 50 yards, but not consistently hit a 4' x 4' target holder at 100 yards! I finally discovered Precision Rifle Muzzleloading Bullets and my gun handles their 300 and 330 gr. bullets and similar weight bullets from other sources quite well. Lighter bullets just would not shoot well in my gun. OK to test loads at 60 yards, but you better shoot some at 100 yards before you hunt.

RE: question

I find some of the hollow point pistol bullets do not perform as well at the 100yd range as they do at 50-60yds. Case in point the T/C XTP bullets. The groups opened up enough to spoil what would otherwize be a great day at the range. This is in the 1500fps range they perform pretty good at faster speeds but going that much faster I prefer a flat point or "shockwave" type bullet. In high speed loads the cheap shots will do better for me than the hollow point pistol bullets but not as well as my favorite flat point.
