If you used a big heavy conical, I don't know why you couldn't.

With a 275 or 340 grain Black Belt, it would be adequate. The 340-grain is a special order item from Big Bore Express. I also use the Lyman-Gould .45/70, 340-grain hollowpoint (.457122HP) cast of pure lead and sized to .451, seated over a Wonderwad in a 1/22" twist barrel with 90 grains of FFg. This load would also do for elk.

I thought the minimum legal caliber (for Muzz-loaders) you can use is 54cal? I know that's true for CO and just assumed it was also the same for all the other state's that have Elk hunting?

RE: .45 cal for Elk
I am pretty sure Colorado minimums are 45 cal for deer and 50 cal for elk.

Hey Rog, I mainly hunt whitetails with my Traditions rifle and it's a .45 cal. For them I shot 100gr of loose powder behind a 200gr Hornady or Barnes sabot and have gotten excellent results with both out to 150 yards.
If you've got one of the new Traditions bolt action rifles it should be able to hold 150 grains of powder, that combined with a 300+ grain sabot should be sufficient to drop an elk out to 100 yards I'd say. |
