Pellets or powder

Just taking a short poll, which one do you use, loose powder, or the pellets? I know every gun will like something different, I was jus wondering what most everyone uses.

I'll think you'll find that shooters who fire their MLs every month use loose powder. Once a year ML shooters during hunting season prefer pellets.

I'm a pellets man myself. Never tried loose powder.

Loosey Goosey for me. :D

I've tried 'em all except the 777 pellets - but they CAN'T shoot any better than my loose loads, so there's no use spending the extra $$$ to try them.

Off-topic....

Is the Swiss FF granules smaller than the Goex? What about FFF vs FFF? It's for my sidelocks & I'm worried about bore pressures using Swiss FFF in my 50 & 58-cals. I must buy a 5-jug minimum to offset HAZMAT fees. I want to make sure I get the right one so I'm asking users for their advice.

Loose - American Pioneer(The old Clean Shot) in my Knight. Loose - Goex in my T/C and my semi retired CVA side Lock.

Smaller on both counts...FFg and FFFg. The Swiss is more of a flake than granules like Goex. Has a different tint to it also, kind of a silver black, where the Goex is that dark, flat black. I don't use the 3F in my muzzleloader because I'm happy with the 2F Swiss. I do use the 3F in my blackpowder cartridges and am happy with it. The Swiss will burn cleaner too. Pressure wise, I'm sure you'll be fine, especially if you cut back about 10 percent to start with on that 3F. While the cleaner subject is on my mind...discovered a new lube that seems to be something. Was unsure of it when told about it by a gentleman a couple weeks ago til I ordered some and tried it. Took it out one day last week with the sole intention of fouling my barrel without wiping. Couldn't do it. Fired 20 rounds of patched roundball with 70grs. of 2F Goex and 5 of my REAL bullet with 80grs. of 2F Swiss, each time it loaded about as easy as the first one did. As for accuracy, about half way through my shooting a sparrow landed in a bush at 25yds. down towards my target, when the smoke cleared all I found was feathers. Was shooting off-hand. I'm happy with it. If you're interested I'll sure let you know. I would've never guessed it.

I've never tried pellets - I'm not sure why people use them.

Loose always loose... Had a bad experience with the pellets and #11 primers. I don't use either now.

Rick, because it's quick and easy.I only use the gun for deerhunting maybe 4 days a year.CVA Firebolt and it's plenty accurate enough for deer with two 50gr pellets at the range I shoot.

Been muzzle loading a little over two seasons now.
Due to where I hunt, a military base, we can only use shotgun or muzzleloader. So, I use the muzzleloader almost exclusively. Hunt probably 5 or 6 afternoons a week and several mornings.

Use 777 50 grain pellets, two of them. No real reason, mainly because that is what I started with, my encore shoots them very well and I don't feel the need to try loose at this point. Have had excellent results, never a mis or hangfire.

I'll be testing a 45-cal T/C Renegade 1-60 ... also a 58-cal T/C Renegade 1-70 with the Swiss. Still not sure which one to get. Would you say the FF Swiss granules are as small as the FFF Goex??

Also... yes - you got my curiousity up about that bore lube you uncovered. I'm itching to know the source. The only guesses I have are mink oil or bear grease. Sounds like you might be sending me to Pep Boys or Auto Zone thou... lol.

No they're not that much smaller Triple Se7en.
:) Yes you'll be going to a parts store for that lube. It is D&L Handcleaner. My brother-in-law runs a parts store so that is where I ordered mine. Rather than try to tell the story, you can read it on this thread. It starts down about the 8th reply on this thread and goes for a ways. Good luck and would like to hear your results if you decide to try it.
http://www.thehunterslife.com/forums...splay.php?f=19 The thread is bullet lube.

I use both. In my Inline I get more consistany loads and much better accuracy with the pellets.

RE: Pellets or powder

I worked up my load:D using 777 loose and am at 85 grains. I am going to try 2 pellets and see if they are close in accuracy to this load:eek:. If they are I think I will use the loose for the range and the pellets for hunting. The pellets are easier to handle and if you want to unload after hunting you just slide them out the breach end. The guys I hunt with use pellets and even though my reload for a follow up shot was very close to theirs in speed, I think the unloading aspect was better. Just pop out the pellets no powder to clean up. However at the range the loose powder is much more fun:).

RE: Pellets or powder

Used both and I prefer loose. Both will work but really depends on how much you shoot and how your combo performs. No doubt loose offers more in tweaking a specific load combo and is less costly to do so. For T7 users the loose offers more potentency than the same load of Pyrodex, however the pelletized form only offers the cleaning, less smoke and no smell benefits that T7 affords, as the pellets are diluted to match that of their pyrodex counterparts.

Pellets do have the ease of use going for them (especially in terms of field loading while hunting) and some may say constancy as well but that is often debated among seasoned shooters.[8D]

Hey skeeter... I use speed loaders in the field. Powder (loose) on one side and bullet and sabot on the other and a primer already set in it's loader. My problem is after the excitment of that first shot I'm doin to much shakin to reload quickly anyway. I need something to keep that from happening.

Quig

Hand cleaners like D & L from Permatex will slowly erode/thin the barrel walls. Stuff like that isn't much different than JB Bore Paste. I would bet that the percentage of lanolin found in it is either real small (or) it's used to soften the harsh chemicals needed to remove grease/grime from automotive hands. I'll pass on that one. However, I liked the website & may join-in on the discussion there.
