What power scope should I use??

I just bought my first Muzzleloader (Omega) and didn't know what power scope to use. I'm debating between a 2x7x33 and 3x9x40.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks and good hunting!!!

Math the 2x7 is the pick for keeping a light handling rifle just that way. But an Omega (or really ANY muzzleloader for that matter) is anything but quick handling. If you had a common muzzleloader like a 22" Wolverine, CVA whatever etc... then I would say 2x7 but you have a hotrod muzzleloader that deserves at LEAST a 3x9x40.

The gun will shoot MUCH farther than you might think, personally I would max that baby out and go with something over 10X and mildots!!!

I would think either of the two mentioned would do the job fine on your rifle. I would be more concerned about the eye relief and the quality of the light gathering abilities. In the eye relief department, your rifle is a kicker from all reports. I would make sure I have at least a 3.5" or better eye relief. 4"+ would be the area I would be looking at.

I have the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 on my Knight, this scope is clear & crisp and for $200 its well worth it. I like to have the added benifit of having the extra power, but after 13 years I have yet to put it above 4x while hunting, 9x is on while at the range

I agree that the Buckmaster I looked into the other day surprised me. Nikon has improved their scope optics on all their models recently.

I would go with the 3-9x40 scope. It is an all around good choice for a gun like an Omega. Good luck!

If your typical shot is long distance, i.e. over 150 yards, then look at 3x9 scopes. If your typical shot is under 100 yards, then get a 1.5x4.5 or something similar.

Where I hunt I rarely have a shot over 100 yards, most are at 50-60 yards, so I went with a 1.5x4.5 32mm scope (Bushnell 3200 Firefly).

2x7x33 and 3x9x40 are not that dramatically different. Either from a quality MFG would work fine.

If you are new to ML and hunting in general and/or if most of your hunting is less than 150 yards, also consider a quality fixed 4x scope.

The Leupold M8 4x is a really nice scope. I've got two of them. One on a ML and the other on a shotgun. You can pick up a decent used M8 4x fixed for a good price and it will have the lifetime warranty even though you are not the original owner.

I have several scopes from Leupold, Burris and a Ziess.

Just remember to not skimp on optics, mounts and rings. Look for "Fully Multi-coated" lenses.
