Default problem with musket caps?

i converted my thompson center over to the nipple that allows you to use a musket cap instead of the no. 11 cap and lately have developed a problem. it takes two trigger pulls to set the cap off. i tried to adjust the spring to get more wack but its not working. do sidelock springs wear out easily? the gun is a little over 10 years old. im using cci caps and dont think its a bad batch of caps. im gonna send it back for a look but was wondering if maybe the musket cap takes more to set off .

TRY REPLACING THE NO #11 CAPS AND SEE IF THE GUN TAKES TWO STIKES TO FIRE ON THE NO#11 CAPS,IF NOT THE MUSKET CAPS COULD BE A BAD BATCH TRY ANOTHER BRAND MUSKET CAPS THAT MAY ALSO HELP SOLVE THE PROBLEM

Are you sure you are seating the musket cap all the way down to the base? The reason is if your not often times the first strike will set the cap and the second will then fire it. Take some emery cloth and buff the musket cap nipple where the cap sits. That will help you put it on better..... See if that does not help. Also try a new brand of cap.

i definatley pushed the cap all the way down . i just bought the cci-s but i had another brand before this and it would do it with those also but not as often. i also found myself sqeezing the caps slightly before putting it on the nipple so it would de-form the cap to allow it to fit snug. if i didnt do this the cap would be a little loose for me. i tried changing the nipple too. im wondering how many pounds of pressure is needed to set a cap off. i wont have a chance to test the no.11 caps any time soon so i will probably send it out. i also noticed the back of the barrel where the barrel hooks into the action and contacts the rear trigger housing has a gap to it that looks a little much. my brothers grey hawk is tight with metal almost touching metal so maybe i have an alignment problem too. its been a weird year for my muzzleoader. i also had a problem with the rear site that i figured out by luck. it seems the rear site on a new englander has a large flat head adjustment screw with the site adjustment height on spring tension. when i would walk with it to my stand i would rest the gun on my shoulder right where the rear site is. this would put enough pressure to push the whole site and spring in on it so the screw would float and turn on its own. during the hunting season i test fired the gun and it was way off. i had to take it apart clean it and use red loc-tite on it so now the screw wont turn without a screwdriver or a penny. If the #11's went off every time, then I would go back to them. Is this a T/C musket nipple or an after market nipple? Some of the nipples are longer then others. I guess at this stage I could cal Thompson Center and see what they suggest....

What kind of rifle is this musket problem on?

i only use the thompson center brand musket nipple replacement part. i switched to musket caps about 4 years ago.i like the musket caps because its much more fire power and its bigger so its better on the fingers as far as not dropping them. i never had a problem till this year and it has been a gradual one. the gun is a new englander caplock that they dont make anymore but looks kinda alot like a firestorm to me. thompson center will get this gun next week. i will let ya- know what they find.

Since the problem has been gradual & escalated when changing to muskets, you may need a lock assembly replacement.... maybe even a trigger assembly replacement. One of my recent purchases of T/C's did the same thing. I packed both off to T/C Inc for an inspection after I called them for advice. They agreed to inspect both parts. For the heck of it, I threw the hammer in the box too - before shipping it off. About 12 days later, a box arrived by UPS (Brown) with a brand new double-set trigger asembly, brand new hammer & brand new lock assembly. Works perfect now. I put it all on my 58-cal Renegade. I bought a GM barrel for it & now the rifle's like brand new.

Liquidorange, My friend I hope you're kidding about using Red LocTite #262.If you did you won't turn it no matter what you use. That is some powerful stuff. You should have used the Blue LT #242 if you were going to use any.Not being smart I wish you luck trying to adjust that sight. A screw that small with Red LT is vertually impossible to remove.I use the LT's at work. I've seen first hand how that stuff works.Red's so strong it's scary.About the only way to break it loose is apply quite a bit of heat. I doubt that would even work on a tiny screw.
