Inline to Lymans Great Plains
 

Ok guys , my new ML shoule be here shortly. What will I have to change as far as gear when I switch to the lymans ? I've always used an inline and this is my first more traditional ML. Thanks in advance for the help.

FFF power or Pistol powder works best with sidelocks
Cap Covers seal your #11 caps in foul weather
RWS Dynamit Nobel 1075s #11 caps (round red box) are the best
Buy a hotter nipple (I think Lyman uses the 6X75 Italian size)
Get a round flash guard to fit over the nipple
Get a nipple remover. I prefer the one that removes both musket & #11s.
You need a wedge pin remover. They are fork-shaped.
Must have sling & sling hardware. Those Lymans are heavy rifles.

I tote around an 11lb H&R during shotgun , so I know the benefits of a good sling.

I concur with Triple Se7en comments, though I think FF powder works just as good as FFF. I read somewhere that FFF in a rifle gets you a little more velocity, but at the price of higher pressure and recoil. The GPR is a heavy rifle though, the recoil from 90 grains of FF under a .50 RB is very managable.

I'd sugget getting a Uncle Mike's Hot Shot nipple for the GPR. Also get a small screw driver and remove the sidelock cleanout screw before you shoot the gun the first time. Coat that screw with some Bore Butter or anti-seize grease and re-install. Remember to remove that screw everytime you clean the barrel. A buddy has the plain Lymans model, a Plains Hunter (I think), and he never removed that screw, it's now frozen in the gun. My GPR is 15+ years old and still shoots as good as the day I built it, never had a miss fire and superb accuracy with a patched RB.

The other thing I would mention is this, if you shoot RBs remember they don't have the downrange power of a saboted bullet or a conical. I've read that the Ball-et has more weight than a regular RB and it's a little harder.

Oh yeah, you can make your own wedge remover with a small piece of dowel.

Welcome to the world of sidelocks and cap locks. I got rid of my inline and now strictly use flint and percussion. I own 4 lymans, you cant go wrong. Unless I missed it, you didnt mention which type of gpr you were getting. I shoot the buffalo ballets and hornadys pa conicals( 50 cal only). these are both great bullets, weigh a little more than the round ball and no patch required. the pa conicals are designed for the slower twist barrels. speaking of barrels, you can get a hunter barrel for the gpr for a 1:32 twist if so inclined.

The guys gave you quite a Christmas list. :D Got to have a powder horn to put that Swiss powder in :D and one to keep your Goex in. That clean-out screw is an Allen head anymore. Like bugs11 said, remove it every time you clean it. I generally don't attempt to take it out till it's soaked in hot water a few minutes, breaks the crud loose in there. Another item you might want, if you don't already is a possibles bag to put all your new goodies in. Tell ya where I've gotten alot of my goodies is www.crazycrow.com they've got everything you need, powder horns, cappers, german silver and brass pill boxes for odds and ends, possibles bags, everything. My rifle likes 80grs. of Swiss behind the 325gr. REAL bullet and with patched roundball I generally shoot 70grs. of Goex. Good luck with that new rifle.

Goex FFG works really well in my .50 Lyman.
I use 90 gr with a roundball.
Buy good quality patches- I prefer them prelubed. I use Oxyoke .018" with the .490 roundball- its a tight fit down the bore, but very accurate. Start with .015" thickness patches, but also try thicker ones.

I love my Lyman Great Plains Rifle. It's .54 caliber and flintlock. I also purchased a spare "Hunter" barrel with the 1 in 32" rifling to shoot conicals. I plan to add the 57GPR receiver sight when shooting the Hunter barrel. The 57GPR receiver sight should be here next week!
