Solvents for my new Omega
 

I have a new Omega stainless t-hole that I have not fired yet, what type of solvent do I need to get the packing gunk out of it?
Also I plan on shooting the same load that shot very well out of my Black Dia. XR. 100 gr. Pyrodex 250 gr. Shockwave sabot.
This site has given me mixed feelings about my new gun ,with the bow season coming to an end I am anxious to site it in , any suggestions on what steps to take as far as break in would be appreciated.

For an initial cleaning in order to get any packing oils/greases out of the rifle it won't hurt a thing to use a standard solvent like Hoppes, Shooter's Choice, etc to get it all clean. THEN I would swab the bore with de-natured alcohol to remove any petroleum residue before shooting it the first time. Petroleum residue & black powder residue can gum up, which is why people caution against using non-natural products................but for the initial receiving cleaning, you want to remove any packing residue as well.

After that, I use a 50/50 mix of Simple Green & water for cleaning after shooting, and I use a CLP product (FP-10 or Mili-tec) for preservation after cleaning. But I ALWAYS swab the bore with de-natured alcohol before shooting to make sure no petroleum residue is in the bore when I shoot.

Your load ought to work well out of this new rifle, though I might suggest trying the 300gr Shockwaves/SSTs as well..................they give me GREAT accuracy out of my Knight.

As far as bore prep/break-in goes.....................I recommend working 6 to 10 patches of a bore paste like J-Bs, Flitz, Iosso, etc through it before shooting. This will knock down any rough edges in the bore - which is what break-in is supposed to do, and what plastic sabots will never do. A lot of folks have a problem with this; but I know doing so, made my Knight and a cap & ball revolver much better shooters. If you had more time, you could do the same thing by firing a couple dozen lead conicals or patched round balls thru the gun.....................but the season is upon us and the paste will NOT hurt.

Your load shoulds shoot great.Clean with above mentioned product to remove any packing reside,then just go shoot it!!!I wouldn't put any product like Jb's through it unless there is a problem,which I doubt.Mine shot great right from the get go with out doing any thing more than shooting it from a cleaned barrel.Good luck,also I might suggest 777 works great and cleans very easy.

Mark whiz were do I get de-natured alcohol??
Is rubbing alcohol the same?

Denatured alcohol is bought at the hardware store in the paint department. You can also use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) for the same thing.

I would not do anything to the bore until I have a chance to shoot the rifle. Many of them right out of the box are nail drivers. No use taking the chance of changing that until you confirm there is a problem.

Also if you get a chance to get to a Cabela's get some 375 grain Buffalo Bullet SSB sabots and put 100 grains of Pyrodex under them and touch them off. I think you will like the accuracy and the down range energy will floor you.

I shoot a Black Diamond XR which is the same barrel just a different action. Good luck with your rifle. The one you have would be my choice too if I were to get an Omega.

Im really looking forward to seeing how much of a peice of $%*& this gun really is ;)
I mounted a Burris 3-9 Ballistic Plex on it and its going to take alot of shooting before I can figure out how the scope is going to compinsate for yardage.

Everything in the above posts should get you on your way. Make sure you have all the packing oils out before you go on to trying to load the gun. I really liked the omega but wished it came in thumbhole last year when I was looking to get a new gun, which ended me up with a Encore. You should have a great gun now as if the Black Diamond isnt already a great gun.

Sounds like you wish you had bought an Omega , but Ive heard so many good things about the Encore ?????
How well does your group at say 100 yrds.?

If your piece of $%*& is anything like mine, it will easily be a sub-minute shooter. My best 3 shot group @ 100yds. has been .550" from my stainless Omega .50 caliber.

I use Butch's Bore Shine to clean out the packing grease in the barrel. I use Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine as a between shots swabbing solvent. Good luck with your new Omega!
