Suggestions shooting round balls

I don't even have a gun yet, but i'm wanting to shoot Roundballs exclusively in a percussion. Probably .54 cal.
From what I've read, the slower the twist and the longer the barrel the better.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

If you want to shoot roundball from a .54 caliber you need look no further then a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. Midsouth Shooter's Supply has some excellent prices on them. They will sure get the job done. And an excellent choice picking the .54 over the .50. The only thing I do different is I shoot a .58 caliber with 1:70 twist in a Green Mountian Barrel. 100 grains of Goex FFg and a moosemilk patched roundball and nothing will stand in the way.....

D&R Sports also carry Lymans

My T/C Renegade has a 1 in 48 twist which is supposed to be a good compromise for round balls and conicals. Mine has always shot both well. I've read that strict round ball shooters prefer something like a 1 in 66 twist rate.

I am looking for a round ball shooter also and have decided the Lyman is the way to go. Another source with good prices is buffaloarms.com. Great people and I buy my BP cartridge stuff from Buffalo Arms. Dave Gullo is the main guy and will talk to you if you need assistance. (208) 263-6953

Totally agree with Cayugad. Midsouth has the best prices I think you can find. I recently bought a left hand GPR 50 cal percussion from them. Not saying the other sites are not good, but comparing price of the .54 percussion. Midsouth has it for 321 and change, D&R 333, and buffalo for 364.

What cayugad said. With it's 1:60" twist barrel, the Lyman GPR shoots round balls very accurately. The 54cal is an excellent choice for hunting deer and other big game. I have a GPR in .54cal and am well pleased with it. It is probably the best bargain available for a production round ball rifle.

Another alternative, if you are comfortable buying from on line auctions, is to buy a T/C Renegade or Hawken stock & lock on ebay. There are always some listed. You can then buy a Green Mountain drop in replacement barrel to complete the rifle. Greem Mountain barrels have a 1:70" twist and are extremely accurate ball shooters. I have a T/C Renegade with a GM .58cal barrel and a T/C Hawken with a GM .50cal barrel and they are the most accurate shooting rifles I have owned. If you buy the stock & lock right, you will have invested about the same money, or less, as you would for a GPR. Either way you go, you will end up with a very good round ball rifle.
