Knight DISC Cleanshot/Triple7???
 

I am new to MZ, and recently purchased a Knight Mag. DISC .50. I have a bottle of Cleanshot pellets that I planned to use. I am going to be putting a scope on the gun in the near future, and want to zero the scope using the powder I wil be hunting with. Since you cannot get the cleanshot pellets, I will probably go with the Cleanshot powder or the Triple 7, as I want the easy cleanup and non-corrosiveness. Also, can I use the powder in my DISC reliably as I have the Crossfire breechplug designed for pellets? Thanks, and any help would be appreciated as I am new to muzzleloading.

Your Knight will work just fine with loose powder. In fact, I highly recommend using the CleanShot loose ffg powder. I've been using the loose Cleanshot in my Knight USAK for over a year and am extremely pleased with it, as it has proven to be reliable, consistent, and Clean. All it takes to clean the gun after a full day at the range is a few patches, some Simple Green/water mixture, and maybe 30 minutes of time.....SWEET!! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

With all that said, I don't recommend the Cleanshot pellets for any reliable shooting. I've known people with too many complaints about their inconsistancies to use them for hunting or precision target shooting. However, since you have some already, you could go ahead and start with them to help you get used to the gun and to break things in a little bit - plus they will get you in the ballpark for an initial sight-in, you just can't count on close groupings.

To be honest, I really don't like any of the pellets - even the Pyrodex. Not only do they not allow powder adjustments in increments of less than 10gr, but the only misfire I have had to date, is with the Pyro pellets. Fortunately it was at the range, so no meat was lost - but it made such a wierd sound when it went off, that I got a lot of strange looks and questions when the range went dead. So I definitely consider loose powder more controllable & reliable.

Now, my opinion of CleanShot may change once I can get my hands on some Triple-7. If it lives up to Hodgdon's claims of cleanliness and power (up to 15% higher than Pyro or Cleanshot), I might well switch. But it will have to prove itself to be every bit the shooter that Cleanshot is before it goes into a hunting situation in my guns.

It is true that the pellets do develop higher muzzle velocites than loose powder and I believe the answer Knight gave you explains why. It has come to my understanding, that Pyrodex mixes a certain amount of &quot;flame accelerator&quot; into their pellet formula in order to make ignition more reliable and burn more thouroughly. So, in a 150gr load of pellets, your actually getting 120gr of true powder & 30gr of accelerator - this accelerates the bullet faster out of the muzzle, but really has no more impact power than than 120gr loose charge. Which would also be why the new models won't always destroy sabots when using 150gr of pellets, but 150gr of loose powder boogers them up pretty good.

However, I don't believe CleanShot uses a accelerator in their pellets and I know they don't have the flame hole down the center of them like Pyro pellets do - which is why I think they have proven to be substandard to the either the Pyro pellets or any loose powder.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll just experiment a little. I will use the Cleanshot pellets to get me on the paper. I probably would go with them if they still made them, but, I will probably go with the Cleanshot ffg or Triple-7. They are working on the Triple-7 pellets now, according to the email response I got from Hodgdon, but, they said it might be a year. Anyway, thanks again, I am new, but I can tell I am going to love muzzleloading. Already considering leaving the .270 at home in rifle season. Thanks again. TNDeerHunter

Every rifle is very different when it comes to powder and bullets.When the knight mk-85 first came out I and a friend got one,his would shoot bigger bullets very good but would not shoot small bullets very good,Mine was the opposite it would shoot(180gr,185,200,240,and 250)well enough to make one large hole at 100 yds.
I have 4 different rifles and each one of them shoots something different,one shoots pellets,cleanshot,one shoots pyo,select grs..one shoots about eithr one satisfactory,one shoots clean shot powder best.

Good discussion. Other than experimenting with your gun and various loads I don't know how you can be sure what will work best for you. I think this is true of centerfire rifles also. That being said, for most hunting applications, I think the most important thing is to get something that performs consistently and stick with it. 1/2&quot; to 1&quot; theoretical improvements in groups from a sandbaged bench rest may not translate into improved hunting performance. However, the practice and confidence you get with the gun by experimenting is invaluable.

Have a Knight .45 Super Disc.Bought it 2 yrs ago.After a call to Knight,their Tech recommended Clean Shot due to best ballistic testing.They also sent me a copy of ballistic tests(on the .45).So I tried Clean Shot loose powder,after 15yrs of only using BP.Well - 2yrs later,I have NO complaints.

I use &quot;Clear&quot; speed loaders marked off in increments.You can readily adjust and see exactly how much powder charge your going to pour down that barrel,a key to consistant shots with a particular weapon.I've used powder in my CVA side lock,Thompson Inline,and now a Knight Disc.Loose is better IMO.I've heard to many bad stories about pellets,don't care who makes em.
