Hornady SST 250gr or 300gr?
 

I'm shooting my Omega .50. I plan I shooting Hornady SST. Which would be better for whitetails, 250gr or 300gr ?

I have a T/C Black Diamond XR and both the 250 & 300 shoot well out of the rifle. I found that 110-120 grains of powder seems to give the best accuracy.

As for which one you should shoot I would suggest you get a package of each and work loads up to see which one gives you the best group. If all the ranges you were going to shoot were 100 yards and under I would go for the 300 grain only because of the larger size.

If your shots might stretch out to 150 yards or further, then the 250 grain will give you the best long range flight of the two although from experience I will say that the 300 grain is no slouch at long range.

Another projectile you might want to try out of your rifle is the Buffalo Bullet Sabot SSB in 375 grain. I buy them at Cabela's. If your shots are 100 yards and under this would be a fantastic hunting bullet. The down range energy is fantastic. With the hollow spitzer point the expansion in my tests on water soaked paper were very impressive to say the least. I had excellent results shooting them with 100 grains of Goex....

Take Cayugad's advice and shoot both to see how your rifle groups them. I am still working on my hunting load and have shot both at the range and I have to say my rifle hates the 300 grain round, but groups the 250 great.....go figure

I have a knight and I am going to use the 250 if they shoot well. I think 300gr is overboard on whitetail ..

Nice to read that my four 36-pk boxes of 285 gr. Buffalo SSBs have a future in this sport. But they shot poorly using BH 209. Too loose!

I shot both in my Knight Disc Elite and Extreme, using 110gr of BH209, Hornady's EZ load sabot and Winchester's regular 209 Primer. We have a lot of hogs on our W. Texas lease and that, plus the better down range retained energy of the 300gr. were factors in my decision to use the 300 for hunting. The bullets did their job, but expansion was inconsistent, and the bullet didn't hold together that well. Lots of bits and pieces. Switched to Harvesters 300 gr. PT Gold for last season. Same load except I use Black Crush Rib sabot. Extremely accurate and devastating performance
