CVA Optima Pro & 1 1/8" 100 yd. groups

I hear talk about this or that and thought I would share what is working for me. I am shooting a CVA Optima Pro w/ an old (30 years old) 2x7 Redfield wideview, .45 Cal, 200 Gr. SST/ML Hornady with 2-50gr Pyrodex pellets and getting 1-1/8" groups at 100 yds. After a first shot to foul the barrel, I run a damp (with spit) patch and then turn it over and run it again, then shoot. Its working for me.

Do you think this bullet is okay for whitetails?

Should be Ok. Your not pushing it real fast so I'd try to keep it inside a hundred yards. Fortunately your slightly higher than average BC will help it retail velocity a little better.

That load should be more then fine for whitetail. You have plenty of power and with the bullet choice will get excellent penetration. With that kind of accuracy, shot placement will be easy. Sounds like you have it made. All you need now is for the deer to cooperate.

Rick

You have a keeper rifle there Rick! Those are shot groups that will make any ML shooter real happy. You should be ok with that bullet/powder combo out to around 140 yards. The SST should even hold up well if you add a 30-grain pellet & practice with it. That's the same bullet that Savage ML-10 smokeless shooters rave about at much higher speeds than your 100 grains are pushing in your CVA.

Happy hunting!
