RE: what is everyone's between shot cleaning sequence for best accuracy results???
Between shots with sabots i just use straight 70% isopropyl alcohol with 3 or 4 strokes with the wet patch and 3 or 4 strokes with a dry patch. Seems to work just fine for me. when shooting a patched roundball using bore butter saturated patches I can get 5 or 6 shots before cleaning and I see no difference in accuracy from the first shot to the 5th shot then on the sixth I see a bit of difference and thats when I run a alcohol soaked patch and then the dry patch.

I clean between every shot also, but I just use water for a wet patch followed by a dry patch before reloading. If the fouling seems to get too bad, good old #9 on a brush cleans everything out great!

RE: what is everyone's between shot cleaning sequence for best accuracy results???
I shoot a fowling shot before any actuall shooting takes place. I shoot mostly round balls and patches in my CVA Bobcat. The fowling load consists of 50 grains of Pyrodex RS (which is all I use), and then the .015" patch and .490" round ball. That one goes into the dirt. Then I do a "spit" patch (literaly, just spit on the cleaning patch, which are TC regular cotton cleaning patches), run it down the bore once, and load the my first round. My most accurate load that I would use for hunting is 80 grains of RS behind the patch and ball. I run one of these spit patches down the barrel between each shot. I can get less than 2" at 50 yds with that, and can go about 10 rounds without cleaning. The cleaning consists of Hoppes #9, and I have had no problems at all, accuracy is quite consistent, plus I just got rid of my CVA Illuminator II sights and put a pair of Lyman hunter sights on it. They are made of steel rather than plastic, and I feel much more confident with them.

Spit patch, followed by dry one, after each round.

I usually shoot less the 5 shots so I dont clean it till I get home but I sometimes run a bronze brush through to knock some stuff loose

RE: what is everyone's between shot cleaning sequence for best accuracy results???
BigCountry,
Ammonia can pit a barrel, but it is an excellent cleaner and a quick drying liquid. The amount of ammonia in windex is minimal but the windex patch really does the job cleaning the barrel - I do not believe it has any real effect on plastic. But, Windex just melts t7 residue - pure easy clean-up. After a day the range 30/40 shots, damp patching between shots, when I get home I run 3-4 windex patches and the barrel is clean - I then follow up with the rest of the barrel treatment. I have never really had a problem with plastic fouling so I have not even targeted this type of cleaning. |

Thanks for the explanation. I see just plain ole water really clean up 777. But hey, I learn something new everyday. I might try to see if it makes a difference over no. 13.

I am getting ready to head to the range tomorrow and was reading through here to get some great advice. I have gotten a bunch!!! Thanks. Just one quick clarification. When you guys are cleaning between 1-4 shots, do you remove the breech plug or swab the barrel with it still in?? and if it is still in, what keeps you from pushing particles into the hole? Just a rookie looking for an answer, Thanks

RE: what is everyone's between shot cleaning sequence for best accuracy results???
No need to remove the breech plug. Just take your cleaning solution, wet a patch and work it up and down in short strokes in the barrel from muzzle to breech. Short strokes will keep it from getting stuck. It the barrel is swabbed after each shot fowling will be kept to a very small amount.
The only time I remove the breech plug and clean the barrel is if I am changing projectiles for testing, or the striker is getting sluggish. I also will check the breech plug to make sure it is not sticking but unless I have shot about 30 rounds, there is really no need. Some people run a dry patch or two after the wet swab. The choice is up to you. If you think the liquid your swabbing with is not drying fast enough, add more alcohol to it. Or run a dry patch or two... Good luck with your upcoming shooting..... |
