scope right for muzzleloader
 

I've recentally purchased the cva optima pro.Along with I was giving a BSA 2.5x10x44mm scope.Would this scope handle 150gr's of pyrodex or would the shock, not allow the scope to stay zeroed in.

First off whether you will need to use 150 grains of powder for the best accuracy is the first question you need to address. A lot of the companies sell these rifles with the claims of 150 grains of powder and super accurate loads. Well it just is not always true. All you do is burn a lot of powder, spray the target, and get a sore shoulder. When you drop the load down to about 100 grains the accuracy comes right in.

Whether the scope will take the recoil of the muzzleloader? Well there is one way to find out. Mount it. Shoot some stiff loads out of it. If it fails then you get a different scope.

Again I agree with cayugad................

Stay at 100gr or less powder for awhile it's really all you'll need to get escellent results.

Scopes can be a crap shoot on muzzleloaders. I went with a shotgun scope for 2 reasons.........resistence to recoil and eye relief. You DON'T want to have to get too close to that scope with the kinda recoil you can get out of these things......... ESPECIALLY if you try the 150gr powder load. [:-]

That's a large scope for that break-action rifle. You may need see-thru rings in order to work the action with that long 44 variable.

I have a Bushnell Banner Dusk and Dawn 1.4 to 4.5 ($90) on my old inline and never had a bit of trouble with it. I am putting a Bushnell Trophy 1.75 to 4 ($110)on my new Winchester Apex. I have Bushnell Trophies on my shotgun and my rifle and never had a bit of trouble with them either. Leupolds are quite a bit better but cost 2 to 3 times as much. Also that 150 grain stuff is not needed it just seems to make things more touchy. I used to shoot 90gr. pyrodex with my 54 cal. hawken and a 500gr. buffalo bullet out to 75 yards (open sights) easy. They never ran away with a hit from that just dropped them in there tracks.
