RE: Favotite load / gun combination?

I shoot the T/C Encore with the 209X45 magnum barrel with a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 mounted. Winchester 209 primers, 100gr of triple 7 pellets. Bullets are 180gr Hornady XTP sabots. It hovers around an inch at 100yds and about 2 1/2 inches at 200yds.

T/C Renegade Hunter w/ peep sight, 435 gr. maxiball conical, 100 gr loose pyrodex, # 11 percussion caps. I don't honestly know just what it groups, but anywhere that front bead settles it seems a .54 cal hole gets made. Offhand it's no chore to hit soda cans out to 75 yds.

T/C Omega 50 cal- 250 gr Shockwave, 81 gr (weight) 777 FFG. Shoots under an inch with some 1/2" groups.

Knight Disc Extreme 50 cal-260 gr. Winchester Platinum tips, 100 gr (volume) 777 FFG. Shoots into an inch and a half, but feel it can do better with weighed charges (been playing with the Omega so I haven't tested weighed charges yet). It will shoot 250 gr Barnes into an inch with 100 gr of FFG 777 by volume.

Knight Wolverine 209 50 cal-260 gr Knight jacketed sabots, 90 gr (Volume)Pyro RS will shoot into an inch. 295 gr Powerbelts with 70 gr. (Volume) FFG 777 will also.

My GPR groups inch and a half with 75 gr FFG 777 and a .530 round ball/.018 pillow ticking patch.

Since I've started weighing charges to within 1/10 of a gr, some of these haven't been shot with the weighed charges. The GPR has been shot with weighed charges equivelent to 75 gr FFG 777. The results given are those results, but I don't have the weight equivelent handy at the moment.

I'm Shooting a Knight USAK American Knight .50cal (#11 Perc cap) with a 1.5X4.5 Bushnell Sportview shotgun scope in see-thru mounts.

Best loads are 80gr of 2fg 777 loose powder with 300gr sabots - such as Hornady XTPs or SSTs or Precision Rifle Extreme or QT sabot rounds.

And shooting just as well are 90gr of 3fg 777 loose powder with 350gr sabots - like the Extremes or QTs. Also 90gr of 2fg 777 and 348gr aerotip Powerbelts are my 2nd shot backup for this load.

And when whatever I'm taking aim on has to absolutely, positively die on the spot - I'll load up 100gr of 3fg 777 loose powder and top with a 400gr Extreme or QT sabot...................kicks like a mule and will drop an elephant. :D

RE: Favotite load / gun combination?

Most of my hunting has been done with .54 calibers shooting round ball or conicals. I have been working up a number of loads in my inlines and are going to give them a chance to try this year. I also want to shoot my .58 caliber GMB with 100grains of FFg Goex and a patched round ball. The power from the .58 caliber is hard to describe until you shoot the .62 caliber with 90 grains of FFg and a round ball.:D

So many rifles... So little time

I shoot a T/C greyhawk in 54 cal with a 2x-7x var VII scope. My favorite load is the powerbelt 348 gr hp and 100 grs of ffg black powder.

RE: Favotite load / gun combination?

kinda depends what I am hunting. I use my flinter 50 with patched round ball over 75 grains of FFg black for most things, best accuracy in a hunting load for me in that rifle, but for big stuff; moose/elk sized I use 80 to 100 grains of 2F under a maxi hunter 370 grain or a swaged pure lead 444grain. it doesn't group like the roundball but gets through that tough hide like I need it to while being acceptable in accuracy to 75 yards.

My fovorite rifle is a October Country, Great American Sporting rifle in 69 caliber, shoot a .678 round ball, .015 patch and 180 grains of 2F black powder.

I also have a 50 caliber Underhammer that I have been toying with till I got stationed in England, been shooting 80 grains of 2F blackpowder and a .490 ball. Going to shoot a deer with the underhammer when I get back home.

Hidden Hunter

Non-bench rest/free-style shooting with your scope/powder/powder grain/bullet grain combination has to be an adventure every time you squeeze the trigger to avoid scope eye. Looking into the 3200 is really nice... wish it had a tad-more eye relief so I could trust one not to bloody my brow or bridge with my similar magnum-type loads.

Trip, Its Athoratative for sure, but not so much, that it is unmanageable. Them Buffalos, print some nice groups, and the 115 , gets them there in a Hurry. Shooting off of Sticks,, duplicates the Bench for me. Came REAL Close to Opening up A Eye, once or Twice, but all in all, i love the feel of the Heavy Stuff. Critters love it to.

RE: Favotite load / gun combination?

Two different rifles.

First, a .54 Italian "Harper's Ferry M1803". It is in quotes, because it doesn't REALLY look like an 1803. .530 ball, pillow ticking patch lubed with T/C Wonderlube, and 80 grains of GOEX FFg. FFFFg to prime. Not a hot load, but accurate enough and every whitetail killed with it has had complete penetration. Don't need more!
Second rifle is being worked up now for hunting. .45 caliber Southern Mountain flint rifle from TOTW parts. .440 ball, pillow ticking, and 70 grains FFFg, with FFFFg to prime.
Can you tell I like flinters?

re: Hidden Hunter

I now shoot the Buffalo S.S.B 285s. I used them all the time two years ago .. then tried some of Hunterman's Boolets being offered at HA. Anyways, I'm married to them now.. ever since I stopped in at Gander Mountain & caught a sale on them.... 36 pk (box) for $9.98. I bought ALL seven boxes they had left. I think 252 should last a while .. eh?

I kept hearing people talk about the horrible recoil with anything over 100gr of powder and anything greater than 300gr bullet. So I get this knight elite, and carefully squeeze off some 150gr loads, with 300gr SST's as I never shot over 95gr for over a decade. In my opinion, my 300win mag, kicks alot harder. Maybe it cause I shoot 300RUM's and 375HH's all the time, but I don't think I would mention recoil as a problem on a muzzleloader. But then again, this elite has a top notch recoil pad.

Favorite combo

95gr pyrodex/240gr XTP, MMP Sabot Knight MK-93
No 11 CCI cap
Leupold Var X III 1.5-5X20mm

Second (new)
3-50gr 777 pellets/250gr Barnes Expander, Knight disc Elite
winchester 209
Leupold Var X II 2-7X33mm

Third (really old)
T/C Hawken
85gr ffg Goex/Hornady 50 roundball
No. 11 CCI Cap

I know what you mean Trip ! I also have several Boxes of the 285 Offerings, and they Love 70gr, of T-7 ffg. These are what i started out testing, but wanted a Little More Meat, in my Boolet. The Buffalos are Highly Overlooked, by a Lot of Shooters, and im GLAD, because they are easy to find on the Shelves . LOL

Now, I might admit, that load might hurt a tad.

that doesnt sound friendly at all, 180 grains of powder!

LivBucks, actually the recoil isn't that bad, the rifle weighs 10 pounds unloaded, going to try some Fg and go up to 210 grain when I get back from England.

RE: Favotite load / gun combination?

Yea I guess the weight of the rifle factors in. Let us know how the 210 gr. charge works out
