new ml
hi everyone new to site and it is a great one, im in the market for a inline front loader and im cant figure out what one i want, im stuck between the omega and the savage. i know both have there ups and downs and i can get them for about the same price any suggestions would be great,
thanks, matt |
RE: new ml
I would stick with the Omega. Trust me I have NO problems with Savage, but for most states it would be like cutting your own throat. Since the smokeless front-stuffers have come out, a lot of states have begun to enact no smokeless laws during ml only seasons. I am not sure if they are legal during gun seasons in these states, but I would check. The Omega is a fine rifle also.

For a lot less $$ try a H&R, a friend bought one , he is getting 2-3 groups (with him shooting) at 85 yds.

RE: new ml
thanks for getting back so soon i dont mind the money i just want a good rifle i know first hand that an omega can take deer out to 200 yards if your a good shot and with the right loads, but in the back of my head i hear the little savge fairy, what loads for the omega do you suggest
thanx matt |
RE: new ml
Sorry, misoryman, I don't have any loads for the Omega, as I don't own one. I was just making the observation of the smokeless powder is all. All I own is a CVA Bobcat .50 cal, which is a percussion side lock. The only reason I have not upgraded to anything more, is that here in Nevada, you cannot use scopes to hunt during a ml only season, so my max range is cut to less than 100 yds anyway depending on the game. So, I just stick with what I have :D, and when my new sights get in either tomorrow or the next day, I get to go play some more:D. One thing that came with my CVA was a general load info page. It listed a few loads with velocities of each and energy figures. Of course these are just a guide, and if TC puts one in theirs, then it should give you a good starting point. Also, you didn't mention what you plan to hunt. That would be a major factor in choosing a load.

charlie, i live in indiana so deer and a coyote if he looks lonley but mainly deer

RE: new ml
In that case, the most accurate load you can find for your new ml will work fine, with just about any bullet/powder wieght combo.

RE: new ml
If you have your selection narrowed down to an Omega or a Savage, I would take the Omega without a doubt. I have nothing to say bad about a Savage. I have heard some excellent range results about them. I just have a real fear about smokeless powder and front stuffers. Someone is going to make a mistake one of these times.
The other big reason is the customer service that Thompson Center provides. They really stand behind their products. Also the projectiles that Thompson Center makes, really preform out of their rifles. I have a Black Diamond XR and all I can say is this is one great shooting rifle. If the Omega shot as good as my Black Diamond, there would be no reason you could not make a 200 yard shot with practice. I would not encourage anyone to do this by the way.;) I think many people are pushing the envelope of muzzleloaders too much. Both would be great rifles... I have owned T/C for a long time and never had a complaint with them, so I have to recommend the one that I know works.... |
RE: new ml
thanks cayugad, i think im off to go order it today thanks again everyone
thanks matt |
RE: new ml
i dont know about either but i do know about TC customer service....i called to ask about buying an owners manual.....they took my address and it was there within a week....really quick actually....a few days i think...i needed one because the rifle was used...then i called to see about getting my lock tuned.....they said send it in its free as long as i didnt abuse it...never did send it in.....i did the work myself....fitted a lyman frizzen to it and adjusted the spring to get it to work nicely and put in a new touchhole.....but they offered......i told them it wasnt sparking like it used to......
