Zero yardage
In trying to sight in my gun, I wonder where does everyone like to zero their's in at?And what ranges, when you zero in at a specific yardage, are you looking for in a maximum shot?
Right now I'm trying at 50yds. Basically just to get it close, but I'm probably not going to go much past a 150yds with any kill shot. It's kind of tough getting use to open sights again...I sure am rusty with them. |
RE: Zero yardage
When I first tried blackpowder with open sights, I had a max range of 60 yards. Within a couple of years, it went to 80 yards, and now I think I am at my all time max of 100 yards, but only under ideal conditions. If I want to shoot game further than that, I can use a scoped rifle. Even though it is legal to use a scope on a muzzy in Texas, I have not, and don't plan to.
To answer your original question. Using a 348 powerbelt and 90 grains of 777, I sight my gun in at 2 inches high at 50 yards, and that is aprox. dead on at 100. I don't have to even think about elevation. I just put it on the middle of the animal's lung field and pull the trigger. Even if I miss guess the distance 10-15 yards at 100, I should still be fine. |
RE: Zero yardage
That two inch high at 50 yards is probably a good reference for use with iron sights. There would be very few loads that wouldn't then be very close to the bull at 100 yards - so long as you can do your part.
txhunter58 - My irons days are over but I only hunt with a muzzleloader. |
