Did I do wrong by passing?
Today I went to a yard sale and they had some muzzle loaders for sale they had two in lines, two side locks, and a pistol
One of the in lines was a Traditions Buckhunter Pro for $100.00 Looked like it was in real good shape... The other was a CVA don't know which model but it's one of them that are the cheapest in their line, for $50.00 I couldn't tell how the bore was because it had so much dried bore butter caked up in the barrel you couldn't see anything.... Next was a CVA Bobcat with wood stock looked real good for $75,00 The other sidelock was a CVA St. Louis Hawkens Looked real good but had just a little rust on the side of the lock plate in some of the engravings for $40.00 and the Pistol was a Kentucky that looked real good for $125.00 Well I've been wanting a Kentucky pistol but past it up and I've been wanting a inline but I past them up (I haven't heard much a bout the CVA in line and also not being able to see the bore turned me off from it) and I got a bobcat but with a synthetic stock so I passed it up But the Hawkens!!!! came home with daddy!!!!!! So did I do wrong by passing any of these up And Can any body tell me about them Cheap CVA Inline's I seen some at a wal-marts near here that were on sale for $80.00 |
RE: Did I do wrong by passing?

RE: Did I do wrong by passing?
The new bottom of the line CVA is called the Buckhorn. It took the place of the Staghorn. I bought a Staghorn last year for $89.00 (approx + shipping etc.) and I have to admit, the Staghorn is a great shooting rifle. The simplicity of the rifle is its most attractive feature. A simple striker sets off the 209 ignition, and the safey is a matter of making sure the striker can not slide forward. The 1:28 twist shoots conicals and sabots very well. I have worked up some excellent loads in the rifle.
The trouble with buying a used rifle is, you really need to examine the bore after it has been CLEANED. This is when you can look for rust and pitting. For example the one you said was caked with bore butter, there is no telling what that bore butter was hiding. Many times, used rifles are a gamble. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. The Hawkins you took home was a great buy. Even with a bad barrel you could replace the barrel and still have more then the value of the rifle. I never shot a Tradition's Buckhunter Pro but I own a couple Tradition rifles and they are good shooting rifles. It might have been a good deal. You probably could have always sold the rifle and got your money back out of it. The Bobcat was priced about right. I think I would have bought it. But then I buy a lot of rifles and work them over and if I don't like them they go down the road. Trouble usually is, I like them and so I have to keep building gun racks.:D If you had young shooters around, they would have made nice guns for them. But then you never know what your going to get until you get it home and on the range.....:) |
RE: Did I do wrong by passing?
Oh I need another MZ like I need another hole in the head Tree Climber.
But I would like three more a inline, a pennsylvania or kentucky and a pistol. Nope not even marred cayugad but I'd got that bobcat in a second if I needed it. The Buckhunter might have been a good buy it was a clean looking gun but once I buy a gun it's mine guess you could call me a packrat good bad or ugly it's mine, So I have to make a decision there and then to walk or carry... Now that I've gotten to shine a light down the barrel on the Hawkins I see that there is just a bit of rust / corrosion about 5 inches down in the barrel that runs down about 4 or 5 inches more it ain't all over it's just a thin strip right up next to four of the rifleing's it Seems stuck pretty good. Any ideas on how to get it out ? The rust on the the lock plate engravings came right off with a little oll and steel wool and looks like it was never there. |

6.5, to many good deals lately for me to. Gail just dosn't understand how I need so many guns they all seem the same to her. Call Traditions in Old Saybrook and talk to the gun shop there, I bet they have a Pennsylvania or Kentucky second for a few hundred off. They are real friendly and will talk turkey with ya. Phil

Carcano
Of all the rifles you saw in that garage sale, you bought the only one that I would of considered. Ya' did good... great price you paid also ($40). Now the next time gun shopping, bring home a T/C or Knight. They're the best mass produced MLs overall. |
RE: Did I do wrong by passing?
