Goex used in an in-line
I was wondering if anyone shoots actual black powder out of their in-lines. The reason I ask is I just bought another in-line
a Knight Wolverine II. It only has a 22" barrel so it can not burn large charges of powder in an efficient manner. I was going to order some bulk powders for the gang and I and thought about getting some Goex 3Fg for the sidelocks and then wondered if anyone ever shoots it in their inlines? I do not see where it would not work. I would still have to swab between shots. I was curious about accuracy with the stuff....thanks in advance. |
RE: Goex used in an in-line
I've tried black powder in my CVA. Under range conditions I had no problems, with ignition or acuracy. But 100 gr of black powder will not shoot the same as 2 - 50 grain pyro tabs. And black powder is, of course, messier (is that a word?).

2X is all I use in my inline. Just keep it clean.

Buy the Swiss. Start a "Shooting Accessories" thread over at Muzzleloadingforum.com on the pros & cons of Swiss vs Goex. There seems to be more Goex/Swiss shooters there than here.
Bore cleanliness, bullet speed & power rules over pocketbook thriftiness. I've been reading all the muzzleloading related items you've purchased in the past year Cayugad (3 guns/2 G.M.barrels/100s of bullets/many accessories)... I know you can afford it. |

They recommend using FFg (2Fg) in rifles I believe it's 45 cal and up.I haven't tried any loose powder in any of my inlines. In my traditional ML's all I ever used was 3Fg and never had a problem doing so.All of them 45,50 and 54 cal plus a Navy Arms double bbl. 12ga.
Best bet is try it and see what results you get. Ruger Redhawk |
RE: Goex used in an in-line
Well I got my supply of Goex & Swiss so I decided to try some of my different loads using FFg. I was very impressed with the way Goex shot. The only real difference of the loads I noticed was in my Staghorn, usually the powerbelts shot better with Pyrodex RS. The 200 grain .452 SWC shot a nice group but for some reason they are now almost 2 inches high.
Whether it was just my day or what, the .458 diameter 405 grain Remington SP with 90 grains of Goex FFg shot excellent. At 50 yards with open sights off my portable benchrest, four shots grouped..just over an inch and thats because I threw one of the five shots. The other four shots are so tight it is hard to tell where one started and the others stopped.... Needless to say I was impressed with the load, but the recoil was a surprise too... A little stiff with some of the loads.:D In the Knight Wolverine off the bench at 50 yards I put 10 shots all in the 9 & 10 rings of the bull. I was shooting Knight sabots and some Nosler sabots. The load was 100 grains of Goex FFg. It has been years since I shot real black powder. I have to admit the stink was back[:'(]. Actually because I swab between shots, fowling was not all that bad in the barrel. Black Powder is a little more messy to clean but I can not say it is all that bad. A little more then Pyrodex I felt. Overall ignition was fantastic even with the #11 caps. I think I amgoing to keep shooting the stuff. It is a lot cheaper to shoot, and is more dependable in bad weather so I read. Next time out I want to try it in some of the sidelocks... one in particular that used to love the stuff 20+ years ago. |
RE: Goex used in an in-line
I have recently tried the Swiss powder in one of my muzzleloaders, and I really like the stuff vs GOEX!! It does seem to me to burn cleaner and leave less fowling in the bore, per the write-ups I've read on the stuff.

RE: Goex used in an in-line
The Swiss is not only a much cleaner burning powder I am finding but it seems more powerful. I wish I had bought more of it when I got my case. The next time out I will correct that mistake. Although I have to admit the Goex FFFg is really a nice powder to shoot. It burns clean and has a lot more pop to it.
