209 or #11 caps
Which burns better for Pyro pellets or loose powder for that matter. Is the 209 primer more reliable in damp conditions?

RE: 209 or #11 caps
209's are a lot hotter and will stay drier in wet weather.
a lot more reliable, less missfires. easier to cap and decap. I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |

RE: 209 or #11 caps
I have a pretty reliable in-line that is set up for caps.....I think it is able to be converted to 209's and if so...I won't hesitate.
I do have a very traditional sidelock, and though I have a kit which could convert it to use small rifle primers....I'm gonna leave it original.....its just more fun in a way to do it the "harder" way. 209's are by far more reliable, easier to maintain, and consistent in the intitial charge they throw. |
RE: 209 or #11 caps
True.......209's are typically hotter burning, more reliable, and more weather resistant.
But, if you convert a #11 cap gun to the 209's, be prepared to rework your favorite loads. I've know several who converted to 209's and ended up going back to the #11's because they could never get a load they were satisfied with. This probably isn't an issue on a gun designed for the 209's, but on a gun originally designed for caps......you might not help yourself with the conversion. |

Mark whiz,
I'll keep that in mind when I convert....I think it is an easy and reversible process for my particular gun. If the accuracy or consistency falls off I'll switch back to 11's right quick. |
RE: 209 or #11 caps
THE 209 ARE GREAT BUT I FOUND THEY DO BUILD UP WITH CARBON.I HAVE A T/C WITH A FLAME TROWER NIPPLE @ YOU NEVER HAVE TO CLEAN THE NIPPLE,DON'T CARE HOW MANY SHOT ARE FIRED.ALSO USEING A CCI MAG CAP.I JUST SWITCH BACK ON MY C.V.A TO NO#II NIPPLE,TO ME THE 209 IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT.

RE: 209 or #11 caps
sshunter, Have you tried the #11 magnum caps from cci? I use them in my sidelock and they work real well in any weather.

RE: 209 or #11 caps
SAM,THAT ALL I USE THE CCI NO #11 MAG CAPS NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS.

RE: 209 or #11 caps
According to Knight the 209's are hotter and more reliable. With pellets that is what they recommend using with their disk rifles, although #11 caps will work. If you want to use #11's they recommend using powder. But not vice versa, i.e.,if you want to use powder in order to customize your load, they still recommend using the 209's.
So it seems from their testing the 209's have the advanage at least with the disc rifles. |
RE: 209 or #11 caps
cci no#11 mag caps @ loose powder only.

RE: 209 or #11 caps
CCI #11 Mag caps seem to work OK for me, but there is no comparison when you introduce the 209 shotgun primer - it is in a different class entirely! In my sidelocks, the 209 will blast a flash of fire right out the muzzle, just like a Large Rifle primer in a centerfire rifle cartridge case!! In addition, I have NOT FOUND musket caps to be any better than #11 CCI Mags.

RE: 209 or #11 caps
209 primers throw 11 times more fire than primers.
