what sights to get?
Hey guys, here is my question. I live in Colorado so I have to shoot open sights. When I first got my muzzle loader I upgraded the sights to some knight fiber optics and they are alright, but I'm really not getting the accuracy that I want. I don't have the greatest eyes in the world and when I'm shooting targets at 100 yards my sights seem like they cover way too much of the target. I'm thinking of putting some williams peep sights on, but don't know if it will make a bunch of difference. Anyone have any experience with the williams type peep sights?
Gun is a Kinght wolverine .54 by the way, and when I do put a scope on it to work up load I get awesome groups, back to open sights and my groups open up. |
RE: what sights to get?
I love the Williams Peep set up. It allows you to see most of the target you are shooting at. I just use a front fiberoptic bead and I like that, but some have switched to a KNS front crosshair sight which is about 1 MOA at 100 yards. In bright light they are great, but I tried it, and in shadow, I couldn't see the crosshair. However, some people love it. There are some other posts describing that set up if you do a seach.
I think you will love the rear peep. Not too expensive to try. About $26? dollars at cabelas. |
RE: what sights to get?
If you put a peep sight on your rifle make sure the front sight is fiber optic. Otherwise they are very hard to find in low light (dawn, dusk, and shadows) conditions. I have a peep site on my T/C Renegade. It is a great site in the right lighting conditions. At 100 yards even with my eye sight, I can still group them very well. I had a gunsmith drill my front sight and put florsecent white paint in it so it stands out like a sore thumb.
If your peep is adjustible with the size of the hole as mine is. Practice with it both ways. I can screw the peep out and it opens the rear peep much bigger, but again, it changes the site picture. My new rifles came with the fiber optic sites and I think I am going to leave them. So far I kind of like them. |
RE: what sights to get?
I had those cheap lite optics sights on my Traditions Deerhunter which broke several times during my first season using it. I replaced them with True-Glo's light optics and love them.
Good luck.... T |
RE: what sights to get?
I just bought an Omega which came with Tru-glo fiberoptics. Took it out to shoot this weekend and bumped the front sight on my pickup tailgate and the fiberoptic rod shattered. The sight itself is metal, so it is fine, but not the fiberoptic rod. wish they had replaceable rods.

RE: what sights to get?
txhunter, my understanding is there are replacement rods for the T/C fiber optic sights. Give them a telephone call and I am sure they will tell you where you can get a rod that sides in there replacing the broken on...

RE: what sights to get?
Thanks cayugad. I thought I heard that they were not replaceable, but called them and they are sending me some replacement fiberotic rods.
Also, for my Omega, the Williams peep sight is too low for the front stock fiberoptic post, so you either have to lower the front sight or raise the peep sight. When I called T/C they told me that they will ship me out a lower front sight at no charge since the stock one was too high. Hope it works. I will let you know. |
RE: what sights to get?
sounds like you are going to have it all under control and a fine shooting rifle to boot. Thompson Center customer service is second to none....

There were a rash of posts around a year ago coming from new Omega owners who complained about running out of adjustment room with their rear sights. As it turns out, another T/C model was also assembled in that factory & for a short period of time, T/C assemblers were using the wrong bin of front sights on the Omega. When the new one finally arrives on your doorstep, match it up to the one that's still on your rifle before you disassemble it. They may possibly ship you one that's in that bin.. another incorrect one. |
RE: what sights to get?
txhunter58,
I ordered a williams sight and will give it a try. For the money even if I don't like it it's not that big of a waste. But it has to be better than what I'm using right now Thanks |
