Wadcutters and sabots?
 

I bought 100 plain lead wadcutter bullets in 300 grain (44 mag) for $6. Have any of you out there in blackpowder cyberspace ever shot these out of your rifle with sabots? How were they?

This will be interesting because I am thinking of getting the same bullet. I wish they were not the wad cutter, but I would think as long as the range was not stretched out too far, they should do all right. I did get some 200 grain SWC .45 caliber .452 diameter I have been shooting out of the inlines and they are shooting fantastic out to 50 yards. I have not had a chance to try them further. I will when it warms up.. Keep me posted on how they shoot. If they shoot good, I am going to get some for myself....:)

I've used the 45colt roundnose leads in a sabot and they shoot almost as accurate as the jacked ones. They worked great on whitetail with good expansion. Zeak

I have wondered how well these 200 grain SWC .45 caliber pure lead bullets would work on deer. I shoot them with 90 grains of Pyrodex. I guess if a 179 grain round ball will take a deer out, there is no reason to think that a 200 grain would not have the same effect.

I just wonder if a person could stretch the magic range of the humane kills a little more then the roundball. You read about people shooting .45 caliber BP rifles using .40 caliber 195 grain projectiles and taking deer out at 150 yards. I have no idea of what kind of down range energy they would still have and I have no idea how to figure out that stuff....

Today I had a chance to shoot the LEE 300 grain .452 diameter - RF pure lead bullets. I was very pleased with the way they shot. Although due to time and other factors I limited the shooting to 35 yards off shooting sticks, the accuracy was excellent.

In the Black Diamond XR I was shooting 100 grains of Pyrodex RS and off the sticks with the scoped rifle they held a 1" group. In fact the more I shot the more the hole expanded and soon it was just a big hole in the bullseye.

So I took a magic marker and drew a small circle in the upper corner of the target. The circle was about 1" diameter. I then got the CVA Staghorn and using 90 grains of Pyrodex RS had the same kind of outstanding accuracy using them and a short black high pressure sabot.

Do you think that the 300 grain with 90 grains of Pyrodex RS would make a good deer load? The accuracy is sure there. When the weather lets me, I want to increase the distance (right now I can not see over the snow banks to the target except in one spot) and see if they will hold tight out to 100 yards....

These are the hand cast bullets I make and use. They are a 360 grain minnie, 320 grain conical, 300 grain .45 cal, 230 grain 45 cal, & 200 grain .45 cal...

Last week I shot 200gr. 40cal. Magnus bullets out of my 50cal. Encore, useing a MMP 50/40 blue sabot, with a pair of 50gr. pyrodex pellets and Remington 209-4 primer.Six shots printed 2" at 100yds. It got to windey to shot 200yds., but I will give it a try one of these days. If this bullet shots 4" groups at 200yds. I will use it for deer next year.

I shoot .45cal 255grain SWC's (Keith style bullet) in my .50cal for practice, and although they shoot well close, the groups seem to open up beyond 50yrds. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer with them if they were more accurate in my gun.

I shot a good sized doe this past Dec. inside of 100 yds.(fence was 100 yds.,she was between me and the fence) with a 300gr. sabot and 85 gr. of T7. Bullet knocked her to the ground and she never got up. If your bullet / charge is accurate at distance it should be more than sufficient to do the job. I have the Optima Pro 50 cal. and with the Bushnell 3X9X40 Banner with BDC I have shot out to 150 yds. with 3" groups using 300 grn sabots and 85 grns. T7 but that seems to be my limit with confidence, the gun may be accurate past that, but I'm not.
