Is this a good muzzleloader for the $$ ? Any opinions ?

I have never shot their muzzleloader. I have read some real good things about it. If the ML is made like their shotguns (which I own) and rifles I am sure for the money it would be a good gun.

I think it is THE best bargain-priced muzzleloader available. I would go with the SS model though.

HAPPY NEW YEAR. You can order the Huntsman from Wal-Mart for under $130. Its a great gun for a low price and its made in the USA. Company is owned by Marlin Firearms.

Underclocked,I believe you said you had a couple of these H&R but may be wrong?Anyway I thought I would post this for anyone that could find it usefull.First off I have never shot one so I don't know anything about them.One day I was at the range and a fellow had one and he was getting ready to shoot as I was packing up to leave and I got to talking to him about his H&R He said he liked it but it had a lot of blowback,and he got to telling me what he did for it,he said he put a very thin brass washer between the breech plug and wrapped the 209 primer with a couple turns of telpon tape.I don't know if this is a problem with anyone else or not,like I said I know nothing about these rifles.And from what I hear these are very good muzzleloaders,I was in a hurry to leave because I had some other things I had to do that day so I didn't get to watch him shoot any.If anyone is interested and I see him at the range again I will try to get more info from him.

On thing that I can't figure out about this gun from the posts that I have read: Is the Huntsman a "System" like the T/C Encore? I mean, does it have several barrels that can be swapped in different calibers, as well as shotgun?

I have one in SS Herman. There is some substantial blowback but it is directed out the cut for the primer carrier. Something could probably be done to minimize the blowback but it really isn't much of a problem with this design. Mine has an excellent trigger and seems to be quite accurate. Very easy to carry and use.

H&R Barrel Accessory Program will explain the situation with barrels. The Huntsman is an SB-1 action so will only accept muzzleloader and shotgun barrels (to 12 gauge). The Handi-Rifle models use the SB-2 action and can be fitted with any of the CF/BP/Shotgun (except 10 gauge I believe) for the prices listed on the link. The actions have to be returned to H&R to have barrels fitted but the pricing seems worth the wait, especially if you sent it during the off-seasons. ONE Encore barrel could easily cost the price of three barrels from H&R.



You can see no clearance in this pic betwen the scope and hammer, but there actually is a very slight amount - just barely enough. Those are Weaver Hi rings on the H&R base. The hammer is wearing the H&R hammer extension. The gap you see at the rear of the barrel is where the tab of the primer carrier protrudes and the blowback vents. Would probably be a bit more of a nuisance for a left-handed shooter.

Nice looking rifle too.was the trigger pull ok from the factory or are they adjustable?I remember seeing one this past summer where it came with a muzzleloader barrel and a 243 barrel,it was in blue though, is this the same rifle(H&R)

The trigger on mine came adjusted perfectly, probably THE best trigger on a factory rifle I've encountered out of the box. There is no easy adjustment if you get a bad one, but there are some decent instructions with pictures posted on the web at a couple of sites if needed.

That combo would be the same rifle except the action would be the SB-2 which is rated for centerfire calibers. That would be a great combo to find. H&R had discontinued the combo packages but I think they are going to bring them back this year. They are also going to put out a non-4473 very similar muzzleloader called the Sidekick - at least per best rumors. :)
