Do you make your own patches??
 

I make some of my own patches. When a cotton shirt or underpants starts getting holy, I will cut the material into patches and store in zip lock bags. I find this better than buying expensive bags of patches.

Does anyone else do this?

YEP, sure do, the problem is, I don' t wear out my underwear fast enough or maybe my rejection standards are lower than they should be.[:-]

I have been making them for years, and they work so much better then the pre-lubed patches you can buy. I go to Wal Mart and get a yard of 100% cotton pillow tick (blue stripe). This is about .015 thickness and cost a little over $3.00. I then get some water soluable oil from an auto parts store and mix it 1 part oil to 4 parts water (in the summer and 1/5 in the winter) in a jar. I cut the pillow tick in to 2 inch strips (I like them extra wide) and put that in the jar of solution. Shake the devil out of it and let it sit until the cloth is saturated. I then pull the strip out, ring the excess solution out of the cloth and let it air dry over a piece of screen, so it dry evenly from both sides. This is then left in the long strips which you later will roll up and put in a zip lock bag. All you do is seat your ball, and cut the excess off the top of the muzzle and you have a perfect seated ball everytime. Really makes a difference in the accuracy, and is a lot cheaper then buying the pre made that always want to side to one side or the other then you try and set your ball.

Wow, I have been buying my pre lubricated patchs and using my home made ones for cleaning. Cleaning two 22 rifles, 1 shotgun, 2 muzzleloaders, and 1 30-06 takes up a lot of patches.

Yep, T-shirts, underwear, pillow cases, etc. Much cheaper and saves me from throwing them or boxing them for the salvi store.

the best cleaning patches in the world are your clean old worn out cotten socks. I cut them in strips, and they make the best cleaning patches I ever found. They work great on the range for swabbing the barrel also... :D
